Spurs scout midfielder a lot this year but Crystal Palace could steal a march
A Ligue 1 midfielder, who Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly exploring a move for, is now expected to be the subject of an offer from Crystal Palace.
Tottenham considering move for 24-year-old
Maxence Caqueret, who has been an ever-present in the Lyon midfield in previous seasons, has been in and out of the team so far this campaign.
It was reported a few days ago that Tottenham have scouted the centre-midfielder regularly this season and are ready to make a move for him if he is made available.
It was alleged that the Lilywhites are assessing whether they could sign the 24-year-old on loan this January or for a cut-price transfer fee.
Crystal Palace plotting move for Maxence Caqueret
Foot Mercato have now explained that Lyon need to trim their squad in January and lower their wage bill in order to comply with financial regulations.
They say that Caqueret is being ‘inexorably pushed towards the exit’ as he is no longer considered an important player by manager Pierre Sage.
The report claims that Crystal Palace are ‘very interested’ in the Frenchman. The Eagles are even willing to put a little less than €20m (£16.6m) on the table and offer him a five-year contract.
However, the publication warns that the deal is far from closed, with other Premier League sides also circling over the midfielder.
Caqueret would be a sensible signing for Spurs
While the Lyon man is not the kind of signing that will excite the Tottenham fan base, he would bolster the squad in an important area.
The fact that the midfielder is available for a low fee, or potentially even on loan, suits Tottenham’s needs.
The reality is that very few top players are going to be available in January, which means that these are the kind of signings that Spurs would likely have to settle for.
