Sports Briefs: Brovelli, San Rafael surge past Marin Academy in Mission City showdown
Gio Brovelli stormed ahead in the second half for 21 points en route to a game-high 28 to lead San Rafael to a 72-57 victory at the cozy confines of Marin Academy. Luke Shapiro added 23 points and Asher Urban had 11 for the Bulldogs (13-3), who also benefited from 15 combined rebounds from sophomores Jax Aguillon and Kannon Wood.
Grayson Rothbart scored 23 points for the host Wildcats (8-6) and Kainoa Ho added 16.
• Henry Dibble led an evenly balanced attack with 12 points as Marin Catholic earned a 64-48 win at home against non-league foe Ukiah on Saturday. Theo Pontes tallied 10 points as 13 Marin Catholic players got on the scoresheet. Chase Merrick finished with nine points, and Bentley Morrow had eight points, six rebounds and two assists. Kelly Storms chipped in with eight rebounds and Quinn Meyers had five rebounds for the Wildcats (6-9), who host San Rafael on Tuesday in a MCAL preview.
• San Marin scratched out a 69-60 non-league victory over Encinal on Saturday. The Mustangs (7-5) are scheduled to face crosstown rival Novato on Wednesday in a MCAL preview.
Girls basketball
Izzy McFadden scored a game-high 25 points and Cecelia Biernat was named the game’s MVP as Marin Catholic beat Granada, 61-40, during Saturday’s Sabrina Ionesco Showcase in Concord. Biernat scored 14 points for the Wildcats (7-6), while Brooke Spagnuolo added nine points. Sami Riley, Lucca Rockett and Jocelyn Gigounas each chipped in with three points. Marin Catholic, with first-year head coach Kayden Korst, are set to take on her alma mater at San Domenico on Tuesday.
• Paige Macy scored 13 points for the Bulls as the Branson School held off Campolindo, 35-31, during Saturday’s Sabrina Ionesco Showcase in Concord. The Bulls (9-5) have a non-league matchup Wednesday with University.
• Roselyn Mazariegos led San Rafael with 11 points in Saturday’s 48-34 non-league loss to Urban. Brisa Briseno added eight points for the Bulldogs (3-8), while Estefani Pantojas and Jessica Vara chipped in with seven and six points respectively.
• Archie Williams fell to Santa Rosa, 56-44, on Saturday in a non-league contest. Kaiya Chiu sparked AW off the bench and helped give the Falcons (7-5) the lead in the second quarter but a couple of late defensive lapses cost the Falcons the lead going into half and they were not able to recover. The Falcons’ Reese Patton led all scorers with 16 points, while Kaeley Sullivan played well inside to score seven points.
Girls soccer
Lauren Willard was involved in all four goals and Addie Covey played a role in three of them as Tam (4-1-3) rolled to a 4-0 shutout win against Montgomery on Saturday. Willard scored each of the first two goals, assisted by Madeline Michelson and Covey, respectively. Willard set up Covey for each of the last two goals. Tam plays three non-league games early next week before opening league play on Saturday at San Marin.
• Catrin Howell had a goal and an assist to help guide Branson to a 44-0 win over St. Mary’s on Saturday. Howell found Riley Pearson for the opening goal in the 20th minute for a 1-0 lead that the Bulls (9-1-0) took into halftime. Branson quickly doubled the lead in the second half, scoring in the 41st minute on a goal scored by Kara Kandakulam and set up by Ally Hsieh. Howell netted the third goal in the 62nd minute, assisted by Sophia Duran. Julia Myerberg capped the scoring in the 72nd minute, assisted by Ava Grevelding. Branson has a non-league game against Terra Linda on Wednesday before opening league play at home against Redwood on Saturday.
Boys soccer
Marin Catholic got back on the winning track with a 3-1 victory over Salesian on Saturday after losing its previous two matches. The Wildcats (5-4) have the week off until Jan. 11, when they are scheduled to face MCAL foe Archie Williams, which played to a 2-2 tie against Sonoma Valley on Saturday.
• San Marin (4-1-2) played to a scoreless draw against non-league opponent Amador Valley (3-3-3) on Saturday.
Prep wrestling
Redwood High senior Alexander Berkowitz ((20-4) took third place at 160 pounds as the Joe Rios Memorial Tournament wrapped up Saturday. Berkowitz earned a 5-4 decision over Spanish Springs senior Abner Lopez in their final match of the weekend in Chico. Redwood finished tied for 20th place with Oak Ridge.
Giants sophomore Dylan Morton (18-8) lost a 16-3 major decision to Cruz Contreras of Aptos to take fourth place at 129 pounds. Redwood junior Jackson Heravi (20-9) lost a 7-1 decision to Sutter’s Angele Uribe to place sixth at 153 pounds.
Tam’s Dylan Van Doren (6-6) went 1-2 in the 141 pound bracket, with a major decision victory in the consolation round.
• San Marin’s Collin Taaffe (6-6) opened the action at the Contest of Champions in Concord with a win and went 2-2 at 138 pounds, with two pinfall victories. Teammate Supasin Wongkhum (215) and Alson Conkey (190) both went 2-2, while Luke Miller (126), Levi Manville (144) and Ben Ackley (175) won one match each.
• Terra Linda’s Arthur Sepan (138 pounds), Laszlo Chaffee (175) and Tristan Collins (190) each went 2-2 at the Contest of Champions in Concord.
Women’s basketball
Alaiyah San Juan hit the 1,000-point career mark as she led Dominican University to a 70-66 home victory Saturday afternoon over Menlo. San Juan finished with 23 points, seven assists and two steals for the Penguins (9-8, 3-3 PacWest). Abby Cooper added a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Taylor Linzie finished with nine points and 16 boards.
• Ty Chappell came off the bench to score a team-high 14 points as Marin held off a late rally effort by Merritt for a 48-44 home win Saturday. Jamaia Harrison had seven rebounds for the Mariners (7-8).
• Senior Kylie Horstmeyer, a Redwood High grad, scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds for San Diego in Saturday’s 72-66 loss to WCC rival Pacific.
• Marin Catholic grad Made Dayton tallied three points for Wesleyan in Saturday’s 60-44 loss to Williams.
Men’s basketball
Dominican University tipped off 2025 with a 72-63 home victory against Menlo on Saturday, as Darius Best scored a team-high 27 points, including five 3-pointers. Jorge Ochoa added 11 points, while Nathan Ilunga and Jayden Bush each scored 10 points.
