Presidential Medal of Freedom to George Soros
The left-wing ideologues who run the Biden White House (and have to all intents and purposes run it for four years) have selected George Soros to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The Medal is the highest civilian award of the United States and is awarded to any person selected by the president. It was created in an Executive Order signed by President Kennedy and is supposed to recognize people who have made “an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, or world peace, or cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.”
[I]t would have been political suicide for the Biden White House to honor Soros … so they waited until after the election to bestow the award.
In practice, presidents have bestowed it on political supporters, officials who served in their administrations, scientists, actors, political philosophers, writers, entertainers, political activists, past presidents of the United States, educators, businessmen, astronauts, journalists, historians, sports figures, poets, foreign leaders, military leaders, judges, physicians, religious leaders — there are no categorical limitations. The selection of Soros is especially revealing about the people in charge of the Biden presidency.
The White House said, quoting Kennedy’s Executive Order, that this latest round of recipients (which also includes Hillary Clinton of “deplorables” fame) are “individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors.”
The recipients, according to the White House, are “great leaders who have made America a better place … [and] who have made extraordinary contributions to their country and the world.” Soros’s “exemplary contributions” have come in the form of donating and fundraising millions for the Democratic Party and left-wing causes, including so-called “racial justice” organizations.
During the 2022 and 2024 election cycles, Soros gave more than $235 million to Democratic candidates and leftist causes, the New York Post reports. Soros’s foundations have donated millions to anti-police groups and initiatives. The New York Post and Politico have reported that Soros has funded student radicals engaged in anti-Israeli protests on several college campuses.
He is perhaps best known for funding through his Open Society Foundation so-called “progressive” district attorneys in major cities like Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, as well as groups who advocate defunding police and criminal justice “reforms” that favor criminals and accused criminal defendants. The Law Enforcement Legal Defense Fund identified 26 “social justice” prosecutors whose candidacies were funded by Soros who pursue “pro-criminal and anti-police policies.”
The Washington Times reported that Soros money backed 75 pro-criminal prosecutors and candidates. The Heritage Foundation accused Soros-funded prosecutors of “wag[ing] war on law and order.” Zach Smith and Charles Stimson detailed “How Radical Soros Lawyers are destroying America’s communities” in their book Rogue Prosecutors.
Dr. Rachel Ehrenfeld, founder and president of the American Center for Democracy’s Economic Warfare Institute, in her book The Soros Agenda accuses Soros of posing a subversive threat to the United States and the West. It started in the 1990s, Ehrenfeld told David Isaac of the Jewish News Syndicate, with Soros’s promotion of drug legalization (and not just marijuana) in an effort to reform America’s criminal justice system. That and other Soros funded causes have, she says, fomented “violence and division in the country, weakening it from within while decreasing its influence in the world.” Other causes funded by Soros include “climate justice,” open borders and the criminal justice reform described above, which Ehrenfeld calls “destabilizing law and order.”
In the past, the Presidential Medal of Freedom has been awarded to some deserving recipients, such as historian Samuel Elliott Morrison, theologian and author Reinhold Niebuhr, journalist Walter Lippmann, heart surgeon Michael DeBakey, astronaut Neil Armstrong, composer Irving Berlin, historian Bruce Catton, Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, Admiral Hyman Rickover, political philosopher James Burnham, writer Whittaker Chambers, National Review founder William F. Buckley, Jr, Cardinal Terrance Cooke, Senator Henry M. Jackson.
Other recipients have included General Andrew Goodpaster, strategist Albert Wohlstetter, Mother Teresa, UN Ambassador Jeane Kirkpatrick, General Matthew Ridgeway, pilot Chuck Yeager, General Jimmy Doolittle, Polish leader Lech Walesa, economist Friedrich Hayek, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, General and Secretary of State Colin Powell, Senator Bob Dole, actor Charlton Heston, Pope John Paul II, boxer Muhammad Ali, editor and writer Norman Podhoretz, golfer Jack Nicklaus, historian David McCullough, Soviet dissident Natan Sharansky, C-Span founder Brian Lamb, Justice Sandra Day O’Conner, baseball star Willie Mays, director Steven Spielberg, singer Diana Ross, Justice Antonin Scalia, political commentator Rush Limbaugh, entertainer Frank Sinatra, and Senator John McCain.
Now, the Biden White House has seen fit to add George Soros to this list, which only demeans the award. Why give the highest civilian award that the nation can bestow to a man who has used his wealth and influence to fundamentally transform the United States? That question answers itself.
Barack Obama’s agenda was to fundamentally transform the United States. He started that process in 2009 by, among other things, apologizing to our enemies in the Middle East, fueling racial division in the United States, promoting an anti-police agenda by pointing the blame at police in every racially-charged confrontation with suspects, and institutionalizing diversity, equity and inclusion in federal agencies, including the U.S. military. The Biden White House, which is run by former Obama staffers, has simply continued the process. When viewed in this light, the award to Soros makes sense.
In the run-up to the 2024 election, it would have been political suicide for the Biden White House to honor Soros (or for that matter the unpopular Hillary Clinton), so they waited until after the election to bestow the award. It epitomizes the Biden presidency — lacking courage right up to the end.
