The Year the (Woke) Stupidity Bubble Burst
We started 2024 using more pronouns than there are characters in the Chinese logograph system, with the imminent threat of the mandatory electric car, and with half the country trying to convince the other half that Joe Biden was so sane in the head that he could even govern for four more years, which is kind of like Dave Barry’s brilliant scientific assessment: “Scientists tell us that the fastest animal in the world, with a speed of 120 mph, is a cow dropped out of a helicopter.”
We’ve seen things our grandparents wouldn’t believe: Bud Light beer company betting all its prestige on the wokeism of trans madness and achieving the advertising milestone of a 25 percent drop in sales.
In general, the entire West, from political institutions to large private corporations, seemed to have set out to prove in 2024 a simple rule endorsed by almost all serious economists, which does not include Paul Krugman: go woke, go broke.
However, we end the year with a rising tide of rejection of Wokeism and the cancellation culture, with an expansion of skepticism toward progressive climate ideas, and with Joe Biden … well, you know where Biden ended up. And the ideas of freedom that made the West great are back in vogue. How did this happen so fast?
It is excessive and too generous to say that conservative politicians have done their job well. In truth, it is the Wokeist left that has consummated its suicide. Rather than a proliferation of intelligent ideas, stupid ideas have simply toppled under their own weight.
Let’s keep in mind that in the name of woke culture, in recent years, books have been burned in schools, like that terrifying ceremony of reconciliation with the indigenous peoples of Canada, in the United States the number of books banned from public libraries and schools has tripled to over 10.000, Disney went to war for alleged racism against many of its own historical children’s hits such as Dumbo, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, or The Jungle Book, and athletes from different disciplines began to kneel en bloc before games as part of racial activism campaigns.
We have seen Democrats enthusiastically tearing down statues of Christopher Columbus, Robert E. Lee, Thomas Jefferson, Juan de Oñate, and so many others, which is a very postmodern way of changing what you don’t like about reality through the noble art of demolition.
We’ve seen things our grandparents wouldn’t believe: Bud Light beer company betting all its prestige on the wokeism of trans madness and achieving the advertising milestone of a 25 percent drop in sales, Disney including homosexual scenes among Lightyear’s child audience, Gillette criticizing in its ads that men are masculine (I guess they were looking to sell blades to pangolins), and Netflix juggling all its products with representation of each of the left’s identity obsessions.
We’ve seen Nike, Coca Cola, Apple, Google, Starbucks, Microsoft, Adidas, Pepsi, Ben & Jerry’s and others modifying their corporate logos to promote LGTBQ+ hysteria in Pride month, and even Burger King bordering on the ridiculous by offering its flagship burger with two buns of the same appearance — two top or two bottom buns — to celebrate gay relationships, which is like Ford starting to manufacture its cars with steering wheels on all the seats so as not to discriminate against other passengers.
The wave of stupidity has exceeded all predictions. We have seen the left wage a campaign of harassment against J.K. Rowling, the author of Harry Potter, for expressing quite intelligent opinions about queer madness, we have seen talentless idiots trying to rewrite the works of Roald Dahl or Ian Fleming, probably without having read them before; nor have H.P. Lovecraft or Mark Twain been spared from having their books reviewed by illiterate newcomers, making Twain’s own quote prophetic: “The funniest things are forbidden”;
They have also tried to cancel, without great success, C.S. Lewis for being sexist and Steinbeck for being racist, and they have even made a campaign to cancel the famous Agatha Christie for being a colonialist.
All this has been promoted by the left, its media loudspeakers and its leaders. On any normal day, from the moment you wake to the time you go to bed again, they ask you to get up without heating to save the planet, to eat rainbow-colored cereal for breakfast because it is more inclusive, to pay climate taxes and fees on every street corner, to use all the pronouns you can think of at work.
They want you to eat Bill Gates’ synthetic meat for lunch to reduce emissions, that you apply DEI policies in your company (and they’ll still require your department to make money), and that, back home, you throw several non-inclusive children’s books on the bonfire, and binge-watch some Netflix series that includes at least two black lesbians, a family consisting of a single dog, and a transgender teenager in love with his non-binary, vegan, climate activist teacher who promotes queer culture among goddamn penguins. Who the hell can resist such brainwashing? Who in the land of the free can be happy in such a prison?
The turning point was a cry in Spanish popularized by Javier Milei: “¡Viva la libertad, carajo!” (Long live freedom, damn it!). At the end of 2023 he was sworn in as Argentina’s new president and at the time we were unable to gauge what that would mean for the rebirth of the idea of freedom in the face of the endless impositions of the new left. Turning Argentina around seemed impossible.
Milei achieved it with uncomplicated speeches and, more importantly, 2024 has confirmed that his model can resurrect even an economy that has been dead for years. His frontal attack on the left resonated with young people and he thus became a highly influential reference point for the conservative universe. It was only the beginning. Throughout the West, the unyielding and fearless right has raised its voice, discovering what we all suspected: that a majority of citizens are fed up with being told what to do, what to think, and what to say.
The victory of Donald Trump, with the invaluable cooperation of a zombie president and the worst candidate the Democratic Party could present, and the wave of conservative victories in Europe, with the young vote boasting the most uncomplicated anti-Wokeism, seem to be the kiss of death to a left that sold its soul to the woke devil without thinking that this imaginary victory would end up being diluted in the face of stubborn reality, of nature, and of common sense.
After all, on a day-to-day basis, people’s main concern is not saving the planet, nor amputating their testicles or paying taxes for others to do so, nor messing up the language with idiotic pronouns, nor pitting women against men, nor reinstating the barbaric laws of indigenism. Most people just want to live better, pay less taxes, and be reasonably free to choose what the hell they want to do with their lives.
