Tottenham player ratings vs Newcastle – Spurs rue missed chances in 2-1 defeat

The full-time whistle has sounded in North London, and it’s time for player ratings from Totttenham Hotspur’s narrow defeat to Newcastle United in the Premier League.

Over the duration of the last ninety minutes, we’ve analysed each player’s individual performance, rating them on a scale of 1-10. Let’s take a look at how each of the Spurs players performed in the match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham Hotspur player ratings vs Newcastle United

Brandon Austin: Making his competitive debut for Spurs after nine years at the club, the Lilywhites’ third-choice keeper was quite impressive between the sticks despite conceding two. He was confident when claiming the ball and positive with his distribution, although his passes didn’t always find a white shirt. He wasn’t really troubled in the second-half, but overall, Austin can be proud of his performance. 8.5.

Pedro Porro: Porro was effective offensively, registering an assist inside five minutes and delivering a number of enticing crosses into Newcastle’s box. Defensively he was solid too, for once, and despite leaving Gordon free a few times early in the first-half, he improved as the match wore on. 7.

Radu Dragusin: Dragusin was left exposed for quite a lot of the first-half and struggled to cope with Newcastle’s attack. The Romanian played a big part in Isak’s goal and was prematurely substituted at half-time, likely due to his ongoing illness. 2.5.

Archie Gray: Gray impressed in front of the England manager despite battling illness and playing out of position. He even lasted the entire ninety minutes and was quite solid defensively, making important blocks and tackles. A spirited performance from the young man. 6.5.

Djed Spence: Spence played on the left flank in the first-half and was relatively poor defensively, as Newcastle exploited his narrow positioning on multiple occasions. He wasn’t too comfortable under the visitor’s press but didn’t lose the ball much either in fairness. At half-time, he was moved into centre-back as Dragsuin came off. Overall, it wasn’t one of his finest performances but in the second-half he definitely improved despiter playing in unfamilair circumstances. 6.

Pape Sarr: Sarr was really energetic with his pressing and his passes were crisp. His running caused Newcastle all sorts of problems and the Senegalese international’s determinism was clear for all to see. 7.

Lucas Bergvall: Bergvall was exciting, and showed many promising signs in possession. His play was positive and he was clearly determined, but off the ball he looked quite raw and it was quite easy for the visitor’s to carve apart Spurs’ midfield. He then was substituted for Maddison on the hour mark. Bergvall can be proud of his performance today and came off to a standing ovation. 8.

Dejan Kulusevski: Deki captained the side for the first time today but he wasn’t as influential as he has been in recent weeks. He didn’t create any clear-cut opportunities for himself or his teammates and arguably, Maddison was better when he came on. It’s likely Deki is feeling the effect of the amount of minutes he’s played as of late. 5.5.

Brennan Johnson: After a relatively quiet first-half, Brennan struck the post from a tight angle after Sarr’s shot was parried into his path, before wasting a huge opportunity at the back post minutes later! Brennan’s lack of technical ability really let him down today, and he often struggled to get the better of Lewis Hall too. 4.5.

Dominic Solanke: Solanke opened the scoring today with a fine diving header to make it 1-0 after four minutes. He had quite a few more headed opportunities throughout the match which he couldn’t convert, and ultimately, Solanke would’ve been disappointed to have not made a difference in the second-half. His hold-up play was good, but not enough. 7.

Timo Werner: Timo tried to create chances with his pace but was ineffective on every occasion. He then came off for Son on the hour mark. 2.

Substitutes:

Sergio Reguilon: Reguilon came on for Dragusin at half-time and was decent, but he blew a huge opportunity right after Johnson did inside the last ten minutes of normal time. Despite that, Reggy actually put in a shift, and posed a decent threat in the final third. 7.

Yves Bissouma: Bissouma replaced Sarr in the midfield with his main objective being to sure up Spurs’ makeshift defence. Biss was solid when he came on, halting many attacks and pressing really well. He oozed class when he had the ball too. 7.5.

James Maddison: Maddison was subbed on for Bergvall at the hour mark and was incredibly influential on the ball. He played some great, positive passes and nearly curled a beautiful effort into the far corner. It was agonisingly close, but Maddison was really promising today. He’s certainly given Ange and Tuchel something to think about. 8.

Heung-Min Son: Sonny replaced Werner and was lively on the left wing, creating an abundance of chances off that left-flank. He didn’t have the impact he would’ve hoped to have, but the Spurs captain was decent. 6.5.
