Locals express concern over maintenance issues, possible exposed remains at New Iberia cemetery
IBERIA PARISH, La. (KLFY) -- Complaints about St. Matthew Cemetery in New Iberia being mismanaged continue as nearby residents came to News 10 to show just how bad it is.
"I feel bad for the people who come out here because we see them every day and they come out here and they they're walking through garbage," said one resident, who wishes to remain anonymous.
Overgrown grass, uneven and exposed tombs, and what appears to be human bones are all visible to anyone who walks through the cemetery.
The resident we spoke with said, "If I had to come here to visit my family, I would. I would just. I would. I would. That just makes me sick to my stomach thinking that these people have to crawl through spots of heavy, you know, debris and just it just it just don't look right."
Residents have continued to express their concerns over the years about the conditions but have not been met any progress. The resident wants to spread the message that something needs to be done soon because it continues to get worse.
"If you all can at least seal it and cut some trees down. Bring a tree cutting company to get rid of the trees that will eliminate the, you know, just like to get some people out here."
