Tottenham show ‘the most interest’ in signing Serie A centre-back
The reports linking Tottenham with one former Premier League centre-back refuse to die down, with several sources from Italy now suggesting that Spurs continue to be hot on the player’s trail.
Ben Godfrey set for early return to the Premier League
Ben Godfrey has had a forgettable last six months since his switch from Everton to Atalanta, having struggled to get much of a look in at Bergamo.
It has been widely reported over the last week that he could exit the Serie A club at the first opportunity, with Tottenham thought to have made an approach to sign him.
However, this information has now been contradicted by other outlets, who have insisted that Spurs have decided to focus on other alternatives despite being offered the chance to sign the Englishman.
Tottenham have shown the most interest in Godfrey
However, according to the latest updates from Italy, Spurs remain one of Godfrey’s potential destinations this month.
Journalist Alessandro Giovanni Pagliarini claims Tottenham have ‘asked for information’ about the 27-year-old, who is also on the radars of both Nottingham Forest and Wolves.
Meanwhile, Rudy Galletti goes a step further and states that Spurs have ‘shown the most interest’ in signing the former Everton man in January.
He adds that the Lilywhites see Godfrey as one of their possible options to reinforce their defence, while also naming Wolves as a contender to secure the Atalanta man’s services.
Why Tottenham’s interest in Godfrey makes sense
With Ange Postecoglou already having four senior centre-backs at his disposal, and with players such as Luka Vuskovic and Ashley Phillips coming through the ranks, Spurs will likely prefer a loan signing over a permanent addition this month.
Godfrey might be one of the few experienced options who is available on loan and the fact that he is quick, versatile and technically proficient makes him a tempting option for Tottenham.
However, there remains a question mark over the former Everton man’s defending and Spurs fans may not be comfortable seeing him line up in the defence for a big game.
