01/03/2025: Windy, Cloudy, Cold, Lake Effect Snow
The Latest Storm Tracker Forecast from Meteorologist Kevin Appleby:
Lake-effect snow will continue to be part of the forecast for the next several days, drifting south and north over the next 48 hours or so. Accumulations will be highest north and west of the immediate Capital Region, but minor snow totals are still expected locally. Windy, rather cloudy, and cooler weather will continue for much of the next 7 days.
Snowfall will be the most persistent up in the southern Adirondacks, but the band of lake-effect will gradually shift southward this afternoon, and could send a quick shot of snow into Albany later in the day. By tonight, the band will continue to drop south, bringing parts of the Greene and Schoharie Counties another burst of snow.
Winds could gust up to around 35 MPH each of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoons. High temperatures today will slowly climb slightly above freezing, but we don't expect such mild conditions going forward well into January.
Temperatures drop into the teens and low 20s overnight as a west-northwesterly wind persists and the lake-effect band drifts south.
We will watch for the lake-effect band to drift back to the north over the course of Saturday, a day that has a better potential to produce locally heavy snow. By the evening and through Sunday morning, the band will once again be back over the Southern Adirondacks.
Temperatures trend colder as well with highs in the 20s, wind chill values in the teens.
The highest totals still to come will fall off to the northwest, but a little bit upslope influence should create moderate snowfall from time to time in the higher terrain east of the Hudson River to produce 2-4+ inches out that way.
Meanwhile, still anticipating an additional 4-8 inches of snow in parts of the Mohawk Valley and southern Adirondacks, with 8-16 inches of additional accumulation farther west. This forecast is from 5 AM this morning through 7 AM Sunday.
Snow showers will persist Sunday morning but should taper by the afternoon, while Monday looks dry but rather cloudy. High temperatures will remain in the 20s on Sunday, with a few highs in the teens possible by Monday. Monday, in some good news, will feature a little less wind.
Windy conditions return for the remainder of the forecast along with daytime high temperatures in the low to mid 20s. While dry Tuesday with just a bit more sunshine, clouds and a few snow showers return for Wednesday and Thursday as the January freeze continues.
