Woman and infant dead, several hurt in crash on Kansas Turnpike south of Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - Two people are dead, and several others are hurt in a crash in the southbound lanes of the Kansas Turnpike. The crash happened just after midnight south of Wichita in Sumner County near 140th Avenue. It is just south of Kansas Star Casino.
A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper tells KSN News that the crash involved a semi, a Chevy Express van hauling a trailer, and a Jeep. The trooper said one person died at the scene, and another died at the hospital. The victims are identified as 58-year-old Ernestina Eumana-Alvarez and Christian Gutierrez, an infant, from Minneapolis, Minnesota. The trooper says the semi hit a van hauling a trailer. The Jeep collided with the overturned van and trailer.
The KHP says eight people between the Chevy Express van and Jeep were transported to the hospital with serious to minor injuries, and two refused medical treatment. Mulvane Fire Rescue said there were 12 patients in total.
The southbound lanes of the Kansas Turnpike are now open. The semi was hauling cattle, and none of the cattle were injured.
Mulvane EMS was assisted by Wellington Fire/EMS and Sedgwick County EMS. Derby Fire and Rescue, Sumner County Fire 9 and Sedgwick County Fire District 1 assisted Mulvane Fire Rescue with patient care and extrication of victims. Mulvane police and the Sumner County Sheriff's Office assisted the Kansas Highway Patrol with traffic.
