Topeka braces for possible winter storm this weekend
TOPEKA (KSNT) - The City of Topeka is bracing for expected winter weather this weekend.
City of Topeka spokesman Dan Garrett said in a press release that the Public Works Department is monitoring weather forecasts for the weekend of Jan. 4-5. He said the path of the storm is still uncertain as of Jan. 2 but work crews are taking steps now to get ready for possible snow and ice.
Topeka street crews are producing salt brine mixtures to treat priority roads in the city with pretreatment efforts starting on Jan. 2 and continuing into Jan. 3. Public Works Department staff will also be on standby throughout the weekend as the weather situation changes.
Garrett said if the current forecast is accurate, the City of Topeka will activate a full snow response. Work crews will plow and treat roads on alternating 12-hour shifts until the storm passes and roads become safer to travel.
The Topeka Rescue Mission's Extreme Weather Taskforce will also be preparing for the storm by getting warming stations ready. More information on locations and hours will be released in the near future.
