Freezing rain could bring messy travel to the higher elevations through Friday
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Wet and wintry weather returns across the region as the next Pacific frontal system arrives Thursday. Road conditions may turn icy for the Mt. Hood area and Upper Hood River Valley tonight through Friday afternoon as freezing rain develops.
Timing & Locations
As the warm front lifts tonight over northwest Oregon, snow levels will rise to around 6,000 feet. The warm air and moisture moving in and over sub-freezing pockets throughout the Cascades and foothills may cause freezing rain to develop.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in place for slick and hazardous road conditions with ice accumulations from 0.1 to 0.25 inch tonight through Friday afternoon. Areas above 3,000 feet could see a coating of ice on roads and trees, this includes Parkdale and Odell and areas along Hwy-35 in the upper Hood River Valley. Light icing is also possible on Hwy-26 through Government Camp on Mt. Hood.
The eastern slopes of the Cascades could also see light icing and up to 2 inches of new snowfall overnight. This will impact areas of La Pine, Sisters, Sunriver, and Camp Sherman. Be prepared for slippery roads and sidewalks. The icing threat shower taper and end by early Friday evening.
Snow levels will return to 4,000 to 5,000 feet by the weekend. Expect new snow and better ski conditions returning by Saturday on Mt. Hood.
