Two clues that ‘give away’ why Nigel has returned to EastEnders say fans – and it’s heartbreaking
EASTENDERS fans believe they’ve worked out the reason character Nigel Bates has returned to Albert Square after nearly 30 years.
They say two major clues have given the game away as to the sad reason behind the Nigel’s unlikely come back.
Nigel Bates, played by Paul Bradley, left Eastenders in 1998[/caption] Nigel with Phil Mitchell, who is played by Steve McFadden[/caption]It’s being suggested that Nigel has dementia, with viewers referencing two incidents in particular, that have led to them drawing that conclusion.
During a conversation with Yolanda Trueman, Nigel, who is played by Paul Bradley, said he’d returned to Walford for “memories”, and wanted his old life back following a split.
He then got close friend Phil Mitchell’s name wrong, instead calling him by his brother’s name, Grant.
And there was a even a third example of Nigel getting things muddled up, when he referred to nightclub Harry’s Barn as The Market Cellar.
However, it hasn’t been called that since 1999, when its name was changed to e20.
Posting on X, one fan said: “It was only a little thing in tonight’s ep… but where Nigel called Phil Grant… could we be seeing the beginnings of an early onset dementia storyline for Nigel?”
While another said on Reddit: “It’s going to be so sad! Glad they’re doing it, I think the middle-aged/older male sadness/depression/loneliness/vulnerability angle they’re going down is really important but it’ll break me to see.”
And another agreed. Posting on the same platform, they said: “I thought that too, maybe he’s just had a diagnosis and wanted to go back to his old home in a vain attempt to cement his memories from there.
“Wonder how it will play out with Phil’s storyline, especially given how devastating dementia can be for loved ones too.”
Phil, played by Steve McFadden, is currently starring in a storyline about loneliness and depression.
He’s been isolating himself more and more in recent episodes although the return of his old friend Nigel has seemingly helped him slightly when it comes to socialising.
The character of Nigel was first introduced in 1992 and played by late actor Leonard Lewis.
After taking over the role, Paul eventually announced plans to leave EastEnders in 1998.
However, Nigel wasn’t killed off but moved to Scotland with adopted daughter Clare, played by Gemma Bissex, which left the door open for a possible return.
He made his return to EastEnders on Christmas Eve.
