What Happened in 'The Way Home' Season 2? Here's a Full Recap Before Season 3
Like with any time-traveling show or movie, Hallmark’s The Way Home might not be the easiest show to keep up with. After all, with overlapping timeframes and different ages for most of the characters, you might need a friend or two to unpack what happened in every episode.
But with The Way Home season 3 releasing on Jan. 3, 2025, fans might be trying to remember those cliffhangers that left them at the edge of their seat in the first place. So, ahead of the season 3 premiere, check out some major questions you might be asking yourself about how season 2 ended.
The Way Home Season 2 Recap
The finale of season two was full of bombshells – here’s a glimpse to jog your memory.
Kat (Chyler Leigh) finally rescued adult Jacob (Spencer MacPherson) and nursed him back to health. While he hesitated to return home to the present at first, he soon jumped in the pond and was ready to reunite with his mom, Del (Andie MacDowell).
As for Kat’s love life, she seemingly chose to be with Elliot (Evan Williams) after her 1814 love interest Thomas Coyle (Kris Holden-Reid) sacrificed himself for her.
In another bombshell moment, it was revealed that Colton might be a time-traveler himself as he was seen standing in the bushes watching himself with young Jacob (Remy Smith) right before his disappearance in 1999.

Is Colton a Time-Traveler?
Perhaps the biggest bombshell in season 2’s finale was that Colton (Jefferson Brown) was potentially a time-traveler himself. In one scene, Colton was seen standing in the bushes watching himself with young Jacob (Remy Smith) at the summer kick-off before he disappeared in 1999.
Shortly after, the show panned to a very young Colton in period clothing talking to an old woman about how it wasn’t his time to go in the pond. So did he know about the pond’s powers all along?
What Happened with Casey?
Casey Goodwin (Vaughan Murrae) was one of the most mysterious characters in season 2. They were Kat’s intern in the newspaper and said they were a grandkid of Evelyn Goodwin. As the season went on, Casey came in and out of town all season but still managed to stay under the radar all season.
In the finale, however, viewers start to think that they’ve been hiding a secret all along. When they came over to the Landry farm and saved the day by saying their family would no longer be buying the farm, Kat noticed that the ring on their necklace looked suspiciously like her own engagement ring. As a reminder, Kat gave her ring to her daughter, Alice (Sadie Laflamme-Snow).
Can Elliot Time-Travel?
In a wholesome moment in the finale, Elliot put his time-traveling theories to the test and jumped into the pond holding Alice’s hand. Much to their surprise, it worked! For the first time ever, Elliot, who now believes that anyone can travel to the past as long as they’re with a Landry, traveled with Alice back to 1999.
Elliot then went back to the Landry home, introduced himself to Colton as a friendly neighbor, and volunteered to help build young Elliot’s nook above the barn. Knowing how much Elliot admired Colton as a father figure in his life, the moment was quite touching.
Is Jacob Back in the Present?
Season 2 ended with adult Jacob jumping in the pond and returning to the present for the first time in decades. While the move took Kat off guard at first, she was supportive and held his hand as they prepared to enter the house with their mom. Will this be the family reunion we’ve all been waiting for?
What Happened With Thomas?
After tensions built between Kat and Thomas Coyle in 1814 all season long, they shared a passionate kiss on the beach before Thomas seemingly sacrificed himself for Kat.
With that said, when Jacob returns to the present, he reveals that Thomas isn’t dead and is very much alive. Will there be a romance between them now that he’s no longer in danger?
Are Elliot and Kat Together?
Speaking of Kat’s love life, she and Elliot also shared a kiss in the season 2 finale. “I want you to choose me,” Elliot told her in the season finale.
After rekindling their on-and-off relationship, Kat went to the pond and said her goodbyes to Thomas. “Maybe I could have loved you, but I love someone else,” she told the pond. “And you and I, it’s just too late.”
Is Del Seeing Anyone?
Del also had a love interest of her own in season 2 as she blossomed a connection with her friendly neighbor, Sam (Rob Stewart). While she was afraid of his playboy reputation at first, some tough love from Del made him drop the act and even dump Del’s friend, Rita (played by Marnie McPhail). Soon, they were enjoying carefree sunsets together by the beach.
Does Del Know About Time-Traveling?
By the end of season 2, Del still doesn’t know a thing about time-traveling and the pond’s magical powers.
Is Alice Seeing Anyone?
While Alice is busy navigating the repercussions of Colton’s death in 1999, she has a flirty connection in season 2 with Noah (Alexander Eling). They share a kiss but are not yet in a relationship.
