New York ranks 3rd as most moved from state in 2024: report
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — New York has ranked third on the list of the Most Moved From States in 2024, an annual study revealed on Wednesday. The result continues the state’s streak as one of the top outbound states for the past five years.
The 48th United Van Lines National Movers Study, which tracks the company’s exclusive data for customers’ state-to-state moving patterns throughout 2024, reported that 59% of the total New York migrations were outbound. The most common reasons for moving out of the state were a desire to be closer to family (25.6%), retirement (20.8%) and a new job or company transfer (15.7%). Nearly one in five of those moving out of the state relocated to Florida.
Nassau-Suffolk and Poughkeepsie also placed spots in the top 25 outbound metropolitan statistics.
On the flip side, 41% of the state’s moves were inbound, with the highest motivations being family (32%), changing jobs (27%) and seeking a different lifestyle (14.5%). A majority of those moving into the state have an annual income of over $150,000 (52.8%).
The study, overall, also revealed a national desire for economic relief amid inflation and a housing crisis. Sunbelt states, like South Carolina, Alabama and Arkansas, became increasingly popular throughout the year as residents moved from urban areas with rising costs and declining opportunities.
“Recent migration data from United Van Lines continues to reveal the lingering influences of the global pandemic,” said Michael A. Stoll, economist and professor in the Department of Public Policy at The University of California, Los Angeles. “As housing costs continue to rise, Americans are moving to lower density, more affordable regions between expensive, economic-driving states.”
