Former NYPD Chief of Department suspended after internal investigation
NEW YORK (PIX11) -- The NYPD's former Chief of Department, Jeffrey Maddrey has been suspended following joint investigations by federal authorities and the Internal Affairs Bureau.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced on Wednesday that the joint investigation under her discretion led to a search of Maddrey's home. The Southern District of New York is also taking part in investigations into Maddrey.
The former police chief resigned from his position on Dec. 20 amid sexual misconduct allegations that he has since denied. Maddrey’s attorney, Lambros Lambrou, has alleged that his client had a “consensual adult relationship” with his accuser, Quathisha Epps.
According to a complaint filed with the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Epps says she was coerced into performing "unwanted sexual favors in exchange for overtime opportunities in the workplace."
The complaint goes on to say that when Epps pushed back against Maddrey’s alleged sexual misconduct, he retaliated by claiming she was abusing overtime to make more than $400,000 last fiscal year – more than half of it overtime.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch appointed Edward Thompson as interim chief of internal affairs, effective immediately. John Chell will become the NYPD’s interim chief of department and Philip Rivera will backfill his position as Chief of Patrol, Tisch announced.
