Why Tottenham may not make any big-name signings in January
It has now emerged that Tottenham are expected to put off big signings until the summer transfer window, with their focus expected to be on something entirely different in January.
How many signings will Tottenham make in January?
There is no doubt that Tottenham’s squad is in desperate need of reinforcements across the pitch, with players dropping like flies with muscle injuries, with their bodies seemingly unable to cope with the side’s high-intensity style.
It was suggested by Alasdair Gold a few days ago that the club could look at as many as five new additions in January, with a new centre-back, left-back, midfielder, forward and goalkeeper on Tottenham’s agenda.
Spurs insider Paul O Keefe made a similar claim, revealing that the Lilywhites want to strengthen in goal, while also wanting a central defender, centre-forward and a winger.
Tottenham will put off big signings until the summer
However, The Times have suggested that we might not see Spurs make any ‘significant additions’ in January, with those deals likely to be left until the summer.
Instead, the focus of the club is expected to be on adding depth to the squad in order to ensure they can cope with the busy schedule coming up over the next few months.
The outlet says that Postecoglou‘s men want at least one left-sided defender to cover for Destiny Udogie and Micky van de Ven, but those kinds of players are not readily available right now.
Additionally, it is explained that Tottenham’s long-term targets in central defence such as Milan Skriniar, Goncalo Inacio and Piero Hincapie would be difficult to sign midway into the season.
Are Spurs right to go for quantity over quality?
One can understand why Tottenham are focused on quantity as the squad is short of numbers at the moment and Postecoglou needs more bodies to rotate his squad, which will help limit future injuries.
Additionally, the club would not want to sign a sub-standard centre-back in January, which in turn prevents them from going for their top centre-back target when he becomes available in the summer.
However, Spurs are lacking in quality in some areas of the pitch, and also need one or two signings who would improve their starting eleven.
