Instant Analysis: Ewers came through when the Longhorns needed him the most
AUSTIN (KXAN) — Cam Skattebo's performance for Arizona State was legendary, but the Texas Longhorns somehow overcame his big night with a 39-31 double-overtime win Wednesday night.
Texas took out the Sun Devils in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl and will move to the semifinals at the Cotton Bowl Classic on Jan. 11. They'll play the Ohio State Buckeyes who throttled the Oregon Ducks 41-21 in the Rose Bowl.
Quinn Ewers hit Gunnar Helm on the first play of the second overtime with a 25-yard touchdown pass, and then Andrew Mukuba clinched the game for the Longhorns with an interception. Ewers finished the game 20-for-30 with 322 yards and three touchdowns. He threw an interception in the fourth quarter that the Sun Devils turned into eight points to tie the game, but he made clutch throws in overtime to lift the Longhorns to victory.
Skattebo accounted for three touchdowns, two rushing and one passing, and he also led the Sun Devils in receiving yards with 99. He rushed for 143 yards on 30 carries and completed a 42-yard scoring pass on fourth down in the fourth quarter.
