Congress’s Diversity Office Will Be Formally Scrapped Under GOP’s Proposed Rules Package
Congress’s Diversity and Inclusion office is set to be formally scrapped under the latest GOP rules package.
The 36-page proposal officially eliminates the congressional Diversity & Inclusion Office, which was first launched by Democrats in 2020 as part of an effort to discriminate against white applicants.
Funding for the office was already eliminated in a government spending bill passed in March, with plans to merge it into a new Office of Talent Management.
However, Democrats had hoped to restore funding for the office if they regained control of the House.
Other notable changes include renaming the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability back to its former title, the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
The Office of Congressional Ethics will also be renamed as the Office of Congressional Conduct.
The package also schedules votes on a dozen Republican-backed bills, including those aimed at improving border security, imposing sanctions on the International Criminal Court, and requiring proof of citizenship to prevent voter fraud in federal elections.
Congress is currently scheduled to reconvene on Friday to vote to elect a speaker, swear in its members and vote on the rules proposed package.
It is currently unclear whether the incumbent House Speaker Mike Johnson has the votes to remain in office, partly because of the GOP’s razor thin majority in the chamber.
However, his chances recently received a significant boost following Donald Trump’s decision to endorse his speakership.
“The American people need IMMEDIATE relief from all of the destructive policies of the last Administration,” Trump recent wrote on Truth Social.
“Speaker Mike Johnson is a good, hard working, religious man. He will do the right thing, and we will continue to WIN. Mike has my Complete & Total Endorsement.”
Thank you, President Trump! I’m honored and humbled by your support, as always.
Together, we will quickly deliver on your America First agenda and usher in the new golden age of America.
The American people demand and deserve that we waste no time. Let’s get to work! pic.twitter.com/ljGrB08dRh
