'Rich people get to do things': Alan Dershowitz argues Diddy should not be in jail
Law professor Alan Dershowitz, a previous defender of Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein, argued that Sean "Diddy" Combs should be released from jail while awaiting trial because he is wealthy.
During a Tuesday interview on Newsmax, Dershowitz explained why he believed Combs should be released from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
"He's presumed innocent and he should not be in jail," the attorney remarked. "He has the resources to afford to have armed guards surround his apartment or house 24-7, and a person is presumed innocent."
"And the Eighth Amendment provides that bail, if it's granted, shall be reasonable," Dershowitz continued. "And that should have been granted in this case."
"Sure, that means that rich people get to do things that people who are less rich don't get to do, but you don't punish the wealthy because not everybody can afford it," he added.
Dershowitz said there had been a "clear violation" of Combs' rights.

"But you don't take it away from somebody just because he has the resources to afford to have armed guards around his house that would absolutely prevent him from in any way committing crimes or escaping," he insisted.
In a November ruling, U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian refused to grant bail for Combs because he did not believe it could prevent the music mogul from intimidating potential witnesses.
