Second House Republican signals defiance of Trump's Mike Johnson endorsement
Rep, Victoria Spartz (R-IN) on Monday signaled that she's not on board with President-elect Donald Trump's decision to back Mike Johnson's bid for the speakership.
Shortly after renegade Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) put out a statement defying Trump's call to make Johnson speaker, Spartz sent out a message on X that also poured cold water on the idea.
"I understand why President Trump is endorsing Speaker Johnson as he did Speaker Ryan, which is definitely important. However, we still need to get assurances that Speaker Johnson won’t sell us out to the swamp," she wrote while also posting a link to an article that highlighted Trump's past endorsements of former House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) and the late Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) to highlight the risk of pushing forward with Johnson.

"President Trump will be able to save America only if we have a speaker with courage, vision and a plan — also public commitment to the American people how he will help deliver President Trump’s agenda to drain the swamp," she wrote in a followup post.
Johnson can only afford to lose one vote later this week when the House convenes to elect a speaker. If Johnson is denied the speakership, then it could seriously complicate Republicans' ability to certify the results of the 2024 presidential election on January 6th, 2025.
