TikTok’s top trends 2024: Food, music, sports and a Bay Area librarian
It’s been a year on TikTok. The social media video outlet rocketed to 170 million users in the U.S. and one billion worldwide, sharing ideas, products, dance videos and more. Users flocked to topics like food, music, sports and books, according to a year-end survey — and this year’s top trends even included a Bay Area librarian. Here’s a look at some of the most popular trends:
Food
Unique and tasty spins on popular staples like peanut butter and pickles were one of many top food trends. NerdyNuts, a dessert-style nut butter company and Kaylin and Kaylin Pickles, a fun-flavored pickle outlet, both took their products from farmer’s markets to online video with huge success, according to the report.
Music
TikTok spotlighted new artists, re-discovered some classics and was the ultimate fandom platform. The Top 10 U.S. songs inspired 140 million TikTok creations globally, with breakout hits like Tommy Richman’s MILLION DOLLAR BABY (VHS) at the top.

Sports
The Olympics, Paralympics and #womeninsports helped propel a 350 percent increase in sports posts on TikTok. Women’s sports alone saw an explosive 2400 percent increase over the past year thanks to athletes like Caitlin Clark, Simone Biles and Ilona Maher. Moreover, 80 percent of TikTok users in the U.S. said that they follow or are interested in the WNBA, and 30 percent more are likely to say that “women’s sports is exciting to watch,” according to the report. This bodes well for the success of new Bay Area women’s professional sports teams, the WNBA’s Golden State Valkyries and the NWSL’s Bay FC, which made the playoffs in its inaugural year.
Books
The literary scene also blossomed on TikTok in 2024. #BookTok, a thriving community of book lovers, had more than 1.2 million posts created in the first 10 months of 2024. The hashtag helped spotlight obscure titles and fuel literary trends, including “library joy.” Mychal Threets, a Fairfield-based former librarian, has used the platform to pay homage to libraries offering book recommendations, library tips and affirming messages – inspiring literary fans new and old.
