Brennan Johnson gives honest assessment of Spurs form – ‘I’m not going to lie’
Tottenham Hotspur’s top scorer Brennan Johnson has candidly spoken about the team’s unwavering effort despite the disheartening results. His words shed light on the Spurs squad’s determination during this difficult stretch.
A threadbare squad and mounting pressure
Tottenham Hotspur find themselves in unfamiliar territory, sitting 11th in the Premier League table as a taxing schedule coincides with an unrelenting injury crisis.
Manager Ange Postecoglou has faced a near-impossible task in recent weeks, with as many as eight first-team players unavailable due to injuries or suspensions ahead of Sunday’s clash with Wolves.
Adding to the woes, Destiny Udogie was forced off during the game with an injury, while Rodrigo Bentancur received his fifth yellow card of the season, earning a one-match suspension.
The relentless run of matches every three days has taken its toll on a depleted squad, forcing players to dig deep while carrying the burden of extra minutes.
Against Wolves, Spurs showed moments of resilience, taking the lead through goals from Bentancur and Brennan Johnson. However, their efforts were undone late in the match as Jorgen Strand Larsen’s equaliser left them with just a single point.
Brennan Johnson’s honest reflection on Spurs’ run of form
Speaking after the game, Brennan Johnson delivered a raw and honest assessment of the team’s current predicament.
He addressed both the effort and the emotional toll of recent results while underscoring the belief that remains within the squad.
He told football.london: “Yeah, exactly [we’re giving everything]. I am not going to lie and say that we are all buzzing, but it has been tough and the minimum we can do is give our all, and I think that is what we are all doing, to be fair.
“I do not think I can doubt anyone’s belief and work rate to the cause. So, obviously we want to work hard, but yeah, it is just disappointing when results like that happen so late on.”
Reflecting on the Wolves match specifically, he continued, “It was a tough game, they had come in off a really good result against Manchester United, but I think we showed enough to get through the game.
“I think we were not at our best as we have been this season, but we definitely created enough chances to win that game, so it is disappointing.
“It is a massive kick in the teeth. To get ourselves from behind, back in front the way we did and definitely had enough chances to maybe get another, but it is just in those games where we have to really grit our teeth and get a result and it is sickening when that goal goes in because it is like everyone has worked so hard and we have not been at our best, but I think we have really worked hard to get a result and for them to score at the end just, yeah, it is a massive blow.”
Brennan Johnson bags his 11th Spurs goal of the season
Despite the setbacks, there have been moments of brilliance that offer hope for Tottenham fans.
One such highlight was the 23-year-old forward’s 11th goal of the season—a clinical finish after a slick team move involving Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski.
“I think it was a nice move, Rodri picked up the ball and found me in a more inside position and then I found Deki in that kind of half space.
“He is so good in those positions, he stays really cool and once he lifted his head back up, I knew I was in a good position to have a really good chance and it is just about getting a good contact on it,” he explained.
With a rare midweek break from fixtures, Ange Postecoglou has given the players two days off to recover mentally and physically before preparing for Saturday’s encounter with Newcastle United.
The hope is that this brief respite will rejuvenate a squad that has shown grit and determination in the face of adversity, even if the results have not yet reflected their efforts.
For Tottenham, the focus now shifts to finding a balance between recovery and preparation, with the aim of turning these hard-fought displays into much-needed victories.
