Hundreds of drivers risk breaking little-known rule TOMORROW – know the law to avoid hefty £300 fine and JAIL
HUNDREDS of drivers across Britain risk breaking a little-known rule tommorow as New Year’s Eve celebrations approach.
Motorists have been warned against transporting fireworks in their vehicles, with hefty penalties for breaching the law.
Carrying fireworks incorrectly could land drivers with a £300 fine, points on their licence, or even a prison sentence.
Fireworks are classified as explosives under ADR (European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road) regulations, and strict rules apply to transporting them.
According to these rules, drivers can only carry up to 50kg of fireworks in private vehicles.
Exceeding this limit could void insurance policies, leading to severe consequences if there’s an accident.
Experts have also urged caution with smaller quantities, as even these come with restrictions.
A fire extinguisher weighing at least 2kg must be carried, and smoking is strictly prohibited while transporting fireworks.
Leaving fireworks in cars overnight is also strongly discouraged, especially during cold and damp weather.
Damp fireworks can leak hazardous materials, potentially leading to unpredictable and dangerous behaviour when ignited.
Ollie Green from MOT collection service Collect Service Go said: “It’s vital to ensure fireworks are stored securely and kept dry while being transported.
“Failure to do so can create serious risks not only for drivers but for everyone on the road.”
New Year’s Eve often sees visibility on the roads reduced due to weather conditions and the aftermath of firework displays.
Drivers are reminded to lower their speeds, use headlights, and engage fog lights when necessary to avoid accidents.
Ollie warned: “Drivers caught in accidents caused by poor visibility could face a £100 fine and three penalty points on the spot.
“If the driving is deemed careless or dangerous, penalties can escalate to bans or even imprisonment.”
With celebrations just hours away, authorities are urging everyone to take extra care and stay within the law when transporting fireworks.
Its not just fireworks drivers need to worry about when planning New Year celebrations.
Warning have also been issued over a New Year parking trap that could get you banned from the roads.
Meanwhile, seven changes to driving tests are expected to take effect in the New Year – and every learner will be affected.
