I live in an old council house with mouldy windows – I did a DIY reglaze & it saved me a fortune

A WOMAN who lives in a council house has revealed a cheap hack to help get rid banish the mould from her windows. 

Naomi explained that the window sill has been “bugging” her since the day she moved in – and that she finally had enough. 

And having been refused help from the council to fix the mould issue, Naomi decided to take matters into her own hands and sort it out herself. 

The woman, who is known as ‘naomilouisewells24’ on TikTok, found a cheap savvy hack which saved her a fortune on getting her windows professionally re-glazed.

Talking to camera, whilst showing the mould residue around her window sill, she said: “If you live in an older council house like me, chances are your window sill and window frames might also look like this. 

“This window has been bugging me since the day I moved in, so today was the day to sort it out and try and make it look a little more presentable. 

“And before anyone says this is the council’s responsibility to sort, I did contact them, they did come out and do an inspection and they told me that this is just a cosmetic issue and if I want it sorted, basically I had to do it myself.”

Before she started, Naomi decided to give the window frames and windows a clean using some soap and a sponge as it’s “been way too long since” she had this done.

Naomi then revealed that she was going to use a PVC window capping board to cover the old window sill. 

So they measured it to the old window sill, and cut it to match. 

Naomi adds: “Although the old window sill wasn’t in the best condition and it didn’t quite fit the window properly, we decided to leave it there and just attach the new one on top.

“We didn’t want to undo a can of worms and find that there were more issues under the old one.

“We then applied a load of glue to the underneath of the window sill before attaching it to the window. 

“Once it was in place, we just applied a bit of pressure to it for a few minutes, making sure that it was really stuck down. 

“We then measured around the edges of the window for the new PVC trim. 

“The elderly couple who lived here before us had put wooden trim around the windows and over time they had just gone rotten and come away from the window, so we decided to replace it with PVC trim instead.

“The cuts around the window don’t have to be completely perfect as you are going to go around afterwards with silicone, which is just going to finish everything off. 

“The reason we’ve added new trim around the windows is because this house is really old and the original trim is actually concrete, so that can’t be taken out.

“It just didn’t look very nice, it’d been painted over so many times and it just looked a mess. “Then it was time to silicone the edges.” 

Naomi added some Fairy washing up liquid and some water into an old Febreeze spray bottle and sprayed it over the silicone to smooth it out.

She explains that the specific window she is working on gets damp at times, so they went for a sanitary silicone which helps to stop damp and mould. 

Once they had finished with the silicone, they used their finger and caulk it around the edges to make it look neater and hide the gap between the PVC trim and wall. 

She finishes the video by saying: “It might not be perfect but it looks so much neater and tidier than it did before.”

In the caption of the video, Naomi added: “Such an inexpensive DIY that makes the biggest difference!” 

Her video gained a lot of attention, with many people rushing to the comments section to share their thoughts. 

One wrote: “You need to give yourself more credit for this. You’ve done a great job and looks like a brand new window.

“Thanks for sharing. I’m going to do the same with ALL of my frames now.” 

A second added: “Wow looks amazing, thank you for sharing as I’m gonna try this on mine now.” 

Another asked: “Can I ask how much you paid for the new sill?” 

To which Naomi replied: “I think I paid £14 for a full length PVC Capping Board but I managed to do two windows from it.”

However, one warned: “Just be weary; I had this done at my temporary accommodation and after a year the ledge had unstuck and when I looked under it was full of black mould.”
