Sports briefs: San Domenico picks up win at Bambauer
Gavin Early posted a double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds as the San Domenico boys basketball team won its second-round game at the Bambauer Classic, 64-48 against Lincoln at Marin Catholic on Friday.
San Domenico came out fast and held a 21-5 advantage in the first half. Chidera Onyeukwu added 14 points and played strong defense for the Panthers (8-3), who face Heritage in the consolation bracket at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
- Archie Williams advanced to the semifinals of the Bambauer Classic following a 51-41 victory against Urban on Friday. Dante Stallone scored 17 points and Brian Wright added 12 to pace the Peregrine Falcons (6-3), who face Serra at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
- San Marin lost its quarterfinal matchup 66-48 against Serra at the Bambauer Classic on Friday. The Mustangs (5-4) are set to face Urban at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
- Kelly Storms scored all 11 of his points in the second half as host Marin Catholic took down Mills 72-54 in the first round of the Bambauer Classic on Thursday. Theo Pontes also scored 11 points for MC (5-6). Henry Dibble had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
- Redwood bounced back with a 59-52 win against Northeast in the Gold Division at the Damien Classic in La Verne on Friday. The Giants (4-4) opened the tournament on Thursday with a 68-52 loss against Campbell Hall. Redwood faces Etiwanda at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
- Branson also recovered from an opening day loss at the Damien Classic with a win against Houston Christian in the Diamond Division on Friday. The Bulls (6-6) sustained a 59-41 defeat against Rancho Verde on Thursday. Branson faces Pacifica Christian at 5 p.m. Saturday.
- Terra Linda built up a 12-point lead at halftime but were unable to hold it, falling 61-56 against host Piner at the Sonoma County Classic in Santa Rosa on Thursday night. Piner, which lost to TL 44-39 earlier this season, got within four points at the end of the third then went to a press in the fourth quarter. TL dropped its third consecutive game — and second at this tournament — on Friday in a 52-47 loss to Santa Rosa. Evan Brewster scored a game-high 25 points for TL (8-3). The Trojans play Ukiah at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Girls basketball
San Marin used a 20-point outburst in the third quarter to break open a close game en route to a 57-44 win against Heritage in the NCAA Silver bracket at the SoCal Classic in San Diego on Friday.
Brianna Nottingham scored 10 of her 13 points in the decisive third quarter after San Marin led 25-24 at the break. Quincy Dean added 12 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Delaney Butler scored eight, including a pair of crucial 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
San Marin (10-2) advances to the title game against Rancho Buena Vista at noon on Saturday.
Dean had 14 points, nine rebounds, and three steals to pace San Marin in a 50-31 victory against Holy Martyrs on Thursday. Nottingham added 12 points and Butler added seven points and five assists for the Mustangs.
- Carly Amborn hit seven 3-pointers en route to a 30-point afternoon as San Domenico defeated St. Patrick-St. Vincent 55-44 in the Ivory bracket at the West Coast Jamboree on Friday. Amahji Cook scored 13 points and Sanne Kostecki added nine. The Panthers trailed 13-7 at the end of the first quarter but went on a 17-4 run to take a seven-point lead into the break. San Domenico (4-7) faces Los Banos at 4 p.m. Saturday at Granada High.
- Avery Myerberg had 30 points and 12 rebounds as shorthanded Branson battled in an eventual 64-58 loss to Pyramid Lake in the Sapphire bracket at the West Coast Jamboree on Friday. The Bulls, who only dressed eight players, also got 14 points and seven rebounds from Kate Spaulding, plus six points and 11 rebounds from Paige Macy. Branson (6-2) faces Buchanan at 11:30 p.m. on Saturday at Carondelet High.
- Tam dropped its first game in the West Coast Jamboree, losing 53-47 against Monte Vista in the Amber bracket on Friday. The Red-tailed Hawks (6-5) play against Oakland at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Alhambra High.
- Redwood also dropped its opener at the West Coast Jamboree, falling 62-41 against Lincoln in the Emerald bracket. The Giants (5-5) play Antelope at 11 a.m. Saturday at Clayton Valley High.
Prep wrestling
Redwood’s Jake Heravi and Alexander Berkowitz both advanced to the semifinals of the Lou Bronzan Invitational at Liberty High in Brentwood on Friday.
Heravi went 3-0 in the 157-pound bracket and Berkowitz went 2-0 at 165 pounds. The semifinals and finals are set to take place on Saturday.
Dylan Morton and Hayden Schepps also competed for Redwood, both going 2-1 on the day at 126 and 150 pounds, respectively.
