From Maya Jama’s see-through dress to Emily Ratajkowski’s Met Gala outfit… why 2024 was the year of ‘nude’ dressing

FORGET long, short, slashed to the thigh or sparkly – when it comes to fashion trends, 2024 will go down in history as the year the dress vanished altogether.

Material covering one’s nether regions, boobs or bottom?

So last year!

Whatever the season or occasion, our biggest celebrities have stepped out in evermore revealing ensembles, in what has been dubbed the “naked dress” trend.

Nude dressing has even extended to mere mortals, with weddings and parties full of flesh-flashing frocks.

Here, Fashion Editor Clemmie Fieldsend celebrates the best racy looks and clear winners from the past 12 months.

JANUARY – MAYA JAMA

LOVE Island All Stars hit TV screens at the beginning of the year – and Maya lifted our January blues with this show- stopping sheer outfit with added flower power (above).

Despite announcing her second split from grime star and rapper Stormzy in July, Maya still had a hit 2024.

She became the darling of our television screens, fronting two series of Love Island and celebrated turning 30 in August.

FEBRUARY – MILEY CYRUS

MILEY’S Maison Margiela dress for the Grammys looked like mesh, but was made from thousands of gold safety pins.

The 32-year-old singer wore the clips placed over her modesty and even took inspiration from Madonna’s cone bra.

Plus, her hair was styled like that of another music icon, her godmother Dolly Parton.

She always likes to go that extra Miley with outfits.

MARCH – KENDALL JENNER

MODEL Kendall showcased her incredible figure at the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party earlier this year, wearing lashings of lace.

Giving the illusion of being buck naked, the 29-year-old wore just a thong and waist-cinching bodice under the black mesh gown.

We weren’t quite sure of the pleated fabric over her pelvic area, but did she pull it off?

MARCH – CHARLI XCX

IT may have been a Brat-green summer for the British singer – but for the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party Charli looked to yellow.

The 32-year-old’s flesh-flashing frock revealed every inch of her body and included a scooped back.

Wearing only a thong and silver jewellery with her see-through dress, she may not have been the only scantily-clad party-goer.

But she certainly was the most naked.

MAYA – BELLA HADID

MAKING a statement on the Cannes red carpet in May, Bella ditched her bra and freed the nipple under a brown mesh dress, with only her stomach properly covered up.

The sophisticated crowd were apparently shocked but Bella is a veteran nude dresser.

With a back catalogue of boob-revealing sheer dresses, the 28-year-old model knows how to do it with a bit of class.

MAY – EMILY RATAJKOWSKI

FOR 2024’s Met Gala with its Garden of Time dress code, Emily, 33, looked to Versace for her outfit.

Wearing a completely translucent beaded, long- sleeved gown, her frock was covered in silver crystals and other shimmering embellishment, complete with an open back.

Baring her boobs is business as usual for stunning Emily but with that figure, I don’t blame her.

AUGUST – HALLE BERRY

AT 58, Oscar-winner Halle is not afraid of jumping on board the latest looks.

She wore this beautiful black lingerie-style sheer dress while attending the Los Angeles film premiere of her new Netflix action comedy The Union, with co-star Mark Wahlberg.

But with lace detail expertly placed, the actress’s modesty was protected while she was able to take part in the trend.

SEPTEMBER – JENNIFER LOPEZ

AFTER months of speculation, Bennifer 2.0 finally reached its finale and J.Lo filed for divorce from Ben Affleck in August.

The following month, the 55-year-old actress wore a side-boob and body revealing “revenge dress” held together with black velvet bows to a screening of her film Unstoppable.

Her glistening look proved no one is going to stop this woman.

OCTOBER – ZENDAYA

THEY say imitation is the highest form of flattery.

So when it came to inducting Cher into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, Dune actress Zendaya dressed as the 78-year-old music icon in this Bob Mackie number, the spit of one of Cher’s Seventies looks.

Fans were mesmerised by the 28-year-old’s pert boobs held in place by a piece of sheer material and I assume, a bit of t*t tape.

OCTOBER – KYLIE JENNER

JOINING other A-Listers on the red carpet for the Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles, the 27-year-old’s look turned heads as she appeared to have forgotten her top.

Kylie’s torso was in fact covered in nude sequins that extended down over her hips to give the look of an exposed thigh.

But with the Kardashian family, it is hard to keep up – whether their clothes are on or off.
