Pursuit ends in deadly crash in Wyandotte County
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas Highway Patrol says what originally was supposed to be a traffic stop for a registration violation turned into a pursuit when the driver fled. The driver later crashed on the Kansas Turnpike, killing him and injuring a passenger.
A Leavenworth sheriff's deputy tried to stop the driver on County Road #1 on Thursday afternoon around 4:45, according to the sheriff's office. They discontinued their pursuit as the driver went onto Interstate 70.
KHP picked up the pursuit and say they learned the truck was stolen.
The driver, identified in a crash report 31-year-old Brian Trober of Kansas City, Kansas, lost control as he exited from eastbound I-70 to southbound I-635, striking a guardrail and overturning before going down a rock embankment and landing in a ditch. The crash happened about 20 minutes after the initial attempted traffic stop.
The passenger went to a hospital with a serious injury. No troopers or sheriff's deputies were hurt during the pursuit or crash.
