Major hay bale wrap producer in Kansas shuts down
JUNCTION CITY (KSNT) - The sole round bale net wrap producer in the nation, located in Junction City, is ceasing operations after decades in business.
27 News spoke to UPU Industries Human Resources Manager Suzanne Deegan who confirmed the business in Junction City ceased operations on Dec. 4. The business was started on Dec. 4, 2003.
Deegan said UPU Industries is well known for their red white and blue net wrap adorning hay bales across the nation. The company's website lists it as the only manufacturer of round bale net wrap in the USA.
"When they came over and brought it to the states everyone was so excited because it was made for farmers by farmers," Deegan said. "Our plant had a lot of military families. The owners are good people."
Deegan said the company employed 30 people and that only four or five had yet to find new jobs.
"As soon as I found out, I immediately turned my attention to finding jobs for my guys," Deegan said.
27 News asked what farmers can do following the shutdown. Deegan said the parent company, UPU Industries Ltd., based out of Northern Ireland, will remain in business and has been in contact with distributors to find a new process.
