How the Royal Family have taken style inspiration from a box of Quality Street chocolates with their fashion
THE Royal family certainly aren’t shy when it comes to wearing bold colours.
It was often said that Queen Elizabeth II wore clothes in bright colours so that she could be spotted easily in large crowds.
And it seems the rest of the family have followed suit.
Just last week the Princess of Wales stepped out in a red Alexander McQueen coat for her annual Christmas Carol Concert.
A lot of their block colour outfits seem to resemble the colours of the wrappers found in a tin of Quality Street.
But are they a gold caramel swirl or a red strawberry delight?
They certainly have hit the sweet spot when it comes to their fashion as Deputy Fashion Editor Abby McHale takes a look.
RED ALERT
Kate, 42, showed us that she remains to be the best dressed member of the royal family when she stepped out for her Christmas carol concert last week.
Wearing a red Alexander McQueen coat she accessorised with an on trend bow, which she added at the collar.
The punchy red shade reminds us of a flavour of Quality Street that often divides households – the Strawberry Delight.
However, we’re certainly not divided on how great she looks in this outfit.
GOLDEN GIRL
It’s not often the Duchess of Sussex is called the golden girl, but that is what she looked to be emulating when she wore this Johanna Ortiz number back in May 2023.
In New York accepting the Women of Vision award, Meghan, 43, stepped away from her usually neutral wardrobe and stood out from the crowd in the gold strapless dress.
The golden barrel is also a star of the Quality Street, with it grabbing the attention of many who open the box.
Sound familiar to anyone?
MELLOW YELLOW
She’s turning 60 in just less than a month and Sophie, 59, definitely has one of the most underrated royal wardrobes.
Seen here at the Trooping the Colour back in June, the Duchess of Edinburgh wore an all yellow outfit from Beulah London, complete with matching fascinator.
A shade not everyone can pull off, the same can be said for eating a toffee finger, a sweet that takes quite a bit of bite with a delicious end result.
BLUE HUE
Queen Camilla is a big fan of the colour blue, having worn the shade for numerous big occasions in 2024 such as Royal Ascot, Commonwealth Day Service, her Christmas Card and as seen here her Australian Tour.
The 77-year-old wore the blue silk dress by Fiona Clare and showed that the blue hue really is her colour.
The blue Quality Street is a coconut eclair and just like Queen Camilla wearing her blue dress in a hot country, coconut is the perfect sweet to make you feel like you’re in warmer climates.
SWEET LIKE TOFFEE
The most laid back of the royals Zara Tindall can often be seen dressed fairly casually.
However, the 43-year-old was seen wearing a very smart looking coat from Fairfax & Favor for a Christmas meeting at Cheltenham Racecourse last week.
Whilst Zara is seen out for family and major events throughout the royal calendar, she is not a working royal, so her appearances are few and far between.
A bit like a toffee deluxe, which has been discontinued from the Quality Street lineup numerous times.
THE PURPLE ONE
One of the most popular chocolates in the Quality Street box, the purple one is very similar to the Princess of Wales, popular.
Channeling this Kate made a rare appearance for 2024 this year for the Wimbledon final, wearing this purple dress by Safiyaa.
The colour purple and the royals have always been closely linked and Kate sure does look regal in this number.
GREEN WITH ENVY
Princess Eugenie really did look like a sweet all wrapped up when she wore this Fendi dress to a Vogue party last September.
This was the 34-year-old’s first public appearance back after giving birth in the May.
Looking good enough to eat in the world of Quality Street the green triangle is also another popular chocolate in the lineup.
A match made in chocolate heaven.
PRETTY IN PINK
For the King’s Coronation last May Princess Beatrice pulled out all the stops and looked pretty in pink in this dress from Beulah London – a royal favourite.
Beatrice, 36, looked very sweet with the puff sleeve midi dress and gold headband.
A bit like a piece of fudge from the Quality Street tin, a pink wrapped which opens into a super sweet piece of fudge – delicious.
What is Princess Kate's signature fashion style?
WHEN it comes to dressing for public engagements Princess Kate has formulated a highly successful signature style, according to fashion expert Amber Graafland
The princess knows exactly what styles flatter her figure and while she may mix her favourite designers with the odd bit of high street, the basic principles remain the same.
The biggest benefit of this confident approach is that it allows her to recycle outfits. Kate is often seen re-wearing bespoke outfits by go-to designers McQueen, Ellis Saab and Jenny Packham.
The other huge plus side is that it has allowed her to amass an impressive handbag collection.
While the exact grand total has never been revealed, it is estimated that Kate owns at least 110 styles.
For most mere mortals that sounds like a huge amount, but if you consider that the princess attends upwards of 100 public engagements a year, it’s not actually that ridiculous.
Kate’s collection includes styles by Jimmy Choo, Prada, McQueen, Chanel, Asprey, Aspinal of London and Ellie Saab to name but a few.
