Suspect in deadly Gahanna Subway shop shooting denied bail
GAHANNA, Ohio (WCMH) -- A judge denied bail for the suspect in a seemingly random shooting at a Subway sandwich shop in Gahanna that killed a man.
In court, prosecutors called Gahanna Police Detective Matthew Fulmer as a witness, who testified that suspect William Marshall fired one shot at the back of the victim's head before turning the gun to a Subway employee and threatening them, instructing them to run. The employee ran into the walk-in cooler and Marshall fired a shot after them, Fulmer said.
Fulmer testified that Marshall may have been off medication for his diagnosed schizophrenia at the time of the shooting. Fulmer said Marshall's parents are local school teachers, and that Marshall lives in the basement of their home.
According to Fulmer, Marshall bought the gun and ammunition from an outdoor shop in October, and officers found a Glock 17 on the scene and a loaded magazine in Marshall's car. Fulmer said Marshall has no prior criminal history outside of minor traffic violations, and that he has no prior history between Marshall and the victim.
The victim has been identified as a 72-year-old man, but officers did not give a name. Fulmer did confirm there was seemingly no argument or interaction between Marshall and the victim before the shooting.
When denying Marshall bail, the presiding judge called the shooting "shocking, random and inexplicable." Marshall is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Dec. 30.
