How to stay safe while shooting fireworks this holiday season
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- Holidays — any holidays — in south Lousiana call for fireworks. The Lafayette Fire Department wants to warn people about the dangers if fireworks aren't handled properly.
Alton Trahan with the Lafayette Fire Department says to be careful of where those fireworks are aimed.
"If you're going to light those, make sure you're aware of where it's going to land," Trahan said. "You're not shooting in the direction of anyone's home, be mindful of a large field fire and that they come down, and they still sometimes have hot embers to them."
Some tips to avoid injury or fires when using fireworks are keeping water nearby, wearing goggles and extinguishing fireworks when done.
He advises people to be cautious of children who may be around fireworks.
"We recommend that any kid that is setting off fireworks be supervised and put them on the ground once you set them off because we know that fireworks also do cause injuries to particularly your hands and sometimes your face and your eyes," said Trahan.
