Memorable Boxing Day Fixtures!
Boxing Day football is very much part of Christmas tradition in a lot of households up and down the country.
Whether it is going to the games with family and friends, or settling down for a football marathon on the sofa – you are never far away from a game on the 26th.
After the 1970s, the festive football, generally moved a day later – with Christmas Day being spent with the family, and football shifting to Boxing Day.
Now a staple in the fixture calendar, the Hibees have pulled off a few crackers on the 26th – particularly in recent years.
The last time we played on Boxing Day was in 2021, when we ran out 3-1 winners over Dundee United at Tannadice. Shaun Maloney was in charge of the Hibees that day, with
Kevin Nisbet, Chris Cadden and Jamie Murphy on target for Hibs in front of a reduced capacity crowd of 500 due to the pandemic.
One Boxing Day victory that will live long in the memory of all Hibernian FC supporters is the ‘Martin Boyle Derby’ at Tynecastle in 2019.
Martin Boyle was clinical in front of goal that day, volleying home his first after six minutes – before adding a second just after the half-hour mark with a well taken one-on-one.
Here is hoping for a repeat of that when the teams meet again later today!
In total Hibs have played 29 games on Boxing Day, and out of the last five, we’ve only been beaten once.
