Why ‘Nobody Wants This’ could be the one to beat at the Golden Globes
While the Emmys and Screen Actors Guild Awards are often guilty of rewarding the same shows year after year, their hipper cousin the Golden Globes are the exact opposite. For them, it’s all about the shiniest, freshest shows on the block, and nothing is newer in this year’s musical/comedy lineup than Nobody Wants This, which debuted this September on Netflix.
Created by Erin Foster, the series follows the out-of-the-box relationship between an agnostic woman (Kristen Bell) and a modern-day rabbi (Adam Brody). Over the course of 10 episodes, viewers see their love affair blossom — and then nearly crumble as religion gets in the way. Nobody Wants This is nominated for Best Comedy/Musical Series, Best Comedy/Musical Actress for Bell, and Best Comedy/Musical Actor for Brody at the upcoming 2025 Golden Globes. See Gold Derby’s predictions.
In the top series race, Nobody Wants This is up against fellow freshman show The Gentlemen, plus three-year-olds Hacks and The Bear, and four-year-olds Abbott Elementary and Only Murders in the Building. Note that Hacks, Abbott Elementary, and The Bear previously won Best Comedy/Musical Series in 2022, 2023, and 2024, respectively. That bodes well for newbies Nobody Wants This and The Gentlemen when you consider that it’s been 15 years since a comedy won this Golden Globe Award category twice: for Glee in 2010 and 2011.
Bell’s competitors in Best Comedy/Musical Actress are Jean Smart (Hacks), Ayo Edebiri (The Bear), Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary), Selena Gomez (Only Murders in the Building), and Kathryn Hahn (Agatha All Along). Bell is no stranger to this category, having been nominated for “The Good Place” in 2019, though she has yet to claim a Golden Globe. As for the others, Smart prevailed in 2022, Brunson in 2023, and Edebiri in 2024. Gomez is also up for Emilia Pérez this year over in the supporting film race, while Hahn is celebrating her first Globe bid.
As for Best Comedy/Musical Actor, Brody is the only first-time nominee in the lineup, and he faces off against Jeremy Allen White (The Bear), Ted Danson (A Man on the Inside), Martin Short (Only Murders in the Building), Steve Martin (Only Murders in the Building), and Jason Segel (Shrinking). White won this award twice in 2023 and 2024, while Danson won for Something About Amelia in 1985 and Cheers in 1990 and 1991, plus he’s this year’s Carol Burnett Award recipient. Brody, Martin, Short, and Segel are all looking for their first Globe victories.
The day of the Golden Globe noms, showrunner Foster told Gold Derby, “I just got off the phone with my mom, who was crying. She was like, I texted all your best friends! It was really sweet. I mean, I’m just kind of shook by the whole thing, honestly. It’s really crazy. I was just texting with [fellow producer] Steve Levitan and he was like, ‘Get your speech ready.’”
