12/23/2024: Subzero Start, Snow Overnight
The Latest Storm Tracker Forecast from Meteorologist Kevin Appleby:
Yesterday featured the lowest temperatures much of our region has seen in nearly two years, and this morning is even colder in most areas! This will be the last brutally frigid morning in the forecast, but more clouds and a period of light, fluffy snow will accompany the milder temperatures into the start of Christmas Eve.
Temperatures will climb well into the teens late this afternoon if not close to 20 degrees as clouds thicken up from the west.
With more clouds in our skies tonight and a light south wind, I don't expect temperatures to drop tonight. If anything, readings will be milder than these forecast lows by daybreak Tuesday.
Snow showers are possible this evening way off towards the north but will gradually become more widespread after midnight.
Snow will be most consistent north of I-90, where locally higher snowfall amounts are possible in a few spots. South of I-90 will struggle to collect more than 2 inches of snow. Nevertheless, it will be enough snow to slow everyone down Christmas Eve morning, so give yourself extra time and space if you have to head out early.
Dry conditions by noontime Christmas Eve with a bit of bonus sunshine possible late. Temperatures will climb into the 20s to around 30 degrees or so before all is said and done.
Guidance has continued to trend colder for much of next week, including Christmas and the start of Hanukah where I expect temperatures to struggle to make it to 30 degrees. Similar temperatures are anticipated by Thursday right now, but a few guidance members are hinting at even cooler condition. Don't be surprised if we end up having to trend the forecast even colder for the end of the week into the weekend.
The next threat for widespread showers arrives Sunday, with some mountain mix possible. Temperatures are favored to be milder by then, with highs in the mid to upper 30s.
