I tried supermarket Prosecco under £10 – the delicious winner was the cheapest bottle

THE festive season is here and what better way to celebrate than with a glass of fizz?

Whether you prefer your bubbles mixed with orange juice to start the day or wait until Christmas lunch is served to pop a bottle, there is no better way to celebrate than with a cold glass of Prosecco. 

But with so many of the big supermarkets offering their own versions for bargain prices, it can be hard to work out where to spend your money. 

To help you decide, I tried a range of different options available for under a tenner from high street retailers Sainbury’s, Tesco, Aldi, Lidl and M&S and marked them all against their value for price and taste… 

Tesco Finest Valdobbiandene – £10

While this was a very easy to drink bottle of prosecco with a nice light fizz, I found the flavour was almost too subtle, especially considering that this was the most expensive bottle I tried.

The light flavour would certainly make it a crowd-pleaser with people who might not choose Prosecco as their first choice of drink, but I would have liked a bit more depth for the price.

Sainsbury’s Prosecco Treviso – £8.50

At first taste this was lovely and smooth to drink with delicate floral flavours and a nice crispness.

However after a few sips I found that it had quite a strong aftertaste, which lingered in my mouth for longer than I would have liked and meant I wouldn’t rush back for more.

M&S Conte Priuli Prosecco – £8.25

As a big fan of all things M&S, I was very excited to try this and considering the relatively cheap price point there was a lot to like.

It had a nice sweetness to it and a slightly biscuity taste which I can imagine would pair nicely with savoury Christmas nibbles.

I thought the look of the bottle had a nice, high end feel that wouldn’t look out of place next to more expensive alternatives.

M&S Prosecco Italia – £10

This tasted like a more refined version of the M&S Conte Priuli, so it was no surprise that it costs slightly more too.

I really enjoyed this bottle!

It had a lovely amount of bubbles, very fizzy without being overpowering and would be an excellent choice to pop before lunch on Christmas Day.

Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Conegliano – £9.75

This dry prosecco has been a staple of my shopping cart since I first got into the drink many years ago.

It has zesty flavours of lemon and apricot and you can smell the aroma as soon as you pop the cork.

However, it does have quite a strong taste, which meant that after just a couple of glasses I was ready to move on to something else.

Lidl Valdobbiandene Prosecco Superiore – £7.49

The cheapest bottle I tried and my favourite overall!

I loved the shape and look of the bottle and thought it would make a lovely gift for someone.

I prefer a dry prosecco and this one didn’t disappoint with nice well balanced flavours of apple and pear which I found absolutely delicious.
