International envoys express grave concern over Afghanistan’s current situation
Special envoys from various countries have stated that achieving long-term stability in Afghanistan requires an inclusive national dialogue and, through this process, the rule of law must be ensured in the country.
In a joint statement, special envoys from over ten countries, including the United States and the European Union, announced the results of a meeting held in Geneva. The statement expressed “grave concern” over decisions made by the Taliban, especially the ban on girls studying medical fields.
The statement further emphasized that Afghanistan needs an “inclusive political system” where the rule of law is guaranteed. The envoys also expressed support for the Doha process and the UN Security Council’s resolution to appoint a special representative for resolving the political crisis in Afghanistan.
Representatives from Canada, the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Norway, South Korea, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States attended the meeting and stressed the importance of establishing a process that leads to the rule of law in Afghanistan.
They noted that over the past three and a half years of Taliban rule, more than 80 “repressive and discriminatory” decrees had been issued, aimed at depriving Afghan women and girls of their right to education.
These policies have been described by the special envoys as “unacceptable,” and they called for the immediate reversal of such actions.
The envoys also expressed “grave” concerns over recent “terrorist” attacks in Kabul and the surrounding region, highlighting that “some terrorist groups still reside securely within Afghanistan’s borders, and these groups have the capability to plan and carry out both domestic and cross-border terrorist attacks.”
The call for a more inclusive political process and the reinstatement of the rule of law underscores the growing international pressure on the Taliban regime to amend its policies, particularly regarding women’s rights. The continued repression of women and girls in Afghanistan, combined with the threats posed by terrorist groups within the country, presents a significant challenge to both regional stability and international peace.
As the situation evolves, the role of the international community in facilitating dialogue and promoting the restoration of rights for all Afghan citizens will be critical. Only through sustained diplomatic efforts and a commitment to human rights can Afghanistan hope to move towards a more peaceful and stable future, where the rule of law is respected, and the aspirations of its people are realized.
