Queens library to get $20M expansion, offering enhanced facilities
QUEENS (PIX11)—A library in Rockaway is set to receive a state-of-the-art makeover.
On Friday, the president of the Queens Public Library was joined by the borough president, elected officials, and community members for a groundbreaking ceremony at Arverne Library.
"We're here for the unofficial start of construction of our 17.3 million dollar addition to this library," The Queens Public Library President and CEO Dennis M. Walcott said. "It'll be up to date. Resilient, fantastic facility to serve the community."
The nearly $20 million, 4600 square foot addition will be built on a vacant but adjacent yard to the existing library.
It will feature a multi-purpose meeting room, a community room, solar panels, and skylights.
The addition will also be elevated with flood vents to protect against water damage, like the damage the original building suffered during Sandy.
Officials say the goal is to invest in the community.
Queens borough president Donovan Richards said, "Libraries aren't just places with books. They're a safe haven for the young people in this community—our elders.
"No matter your economic situation, you should have access to a quality library," said Denise McBride, who has been coming to Arverne Library in the Rockways a few times a month for the last 48 years. "I like coming into read and just enjoy myself. It's like relaxation for me."
She calls it a safe space in the neighborhood.
"I was coming here since my children were small. They came in here to do homework, and it was good for the neighborhood children. They'd all meet here," McBride is thrilled to hear the branch is expanding.
Many longtime library-goers, like Margareth Massac, say the expansion is needed. "It's a very good thing because this library has been a great thing for the community, the kids' elders, and everyone."
The library will remain open during construction so people can still visit.
The project should be completed by spring 2027.
