Fundraiser for alleged United Healthcare CEO killer raises over $100,000
NEW YORK (PIX11) – A “legal fundraiser” has raised over $100,000 for alleged United Healthcare CEO killer Luigi Mangione, PIX11 News has learned. The fundraiser would seemingly cover Mangione’s legal fees.
Over 6,000 donations have been received.
The fundraiser has also been shared nearly 2,000 times, according to the website GiveSendGo.
“We are writing to him and his lawyer to open a line of communication,” read the fundraiser. “We are including some of the anonymous comments people have left here. All proceeds will be sent directly to Luigi or, if he chooses to reject the funds, they will instead be donated to legal funds for other U.S political prisoners and defendants facing politicized charges.”
Mangione, 26, is accused of ambushing and shooting Thompson on Dec. 4 outside a Manhattan hotel where the CEO of the largest U.S. medical insurance company was heading to an investor conference. Investigators believe Mangione was motivated by anger toward the U.S. healthcare system and corporate greed.
Mangione is facing federal charges of murder, stalking, and weapon charges. He is also facing charges from the state of New York.
PIX11 News contacted GiveSendGo and Mangione's legal team, but they were not immediately available to comment.
According to a new national survey by Emerson College Polling, 40% of people ages 18 to 29 find his behavior “acceptable.”
Although Mangione’s fundraiser has raised $173,209, it remains unclear whether it is authorized or whether his legal team plans to accept the funds.
