MLB Rumors: Red Sox Division Rival ‘In Play’ For Massive Moves
The Red Sox have been linked to some of the top free agents and trade targets and competed with an American League East rival along the way.
Yes, the New York Yankees are in those discussions, and the Baltimore Orioles sneak into the interest rumor mill. But the Toronto Blue Jays have been a sneaky player in negotiations.
The problem for the Jays has been that they haven’t been able to secure a big-name free agent. However, Toronto has a master plan to re-sign Vladimir Guerrero Jr., trade Bo Bichette and sign Alex Breman, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal on Thursday.
“None of those outcomes is particularly likely. All, however, are in play, according to sources briefed on the Jays’ discussions,” Rosenthal wrote.
Rosenthal added that the sentiment around MLB is that the Blue Jays are desperate to do something big. It’s unknown what Guerrero would fetch on the open market, but the MLB insider was correct when he pointed out that the fan base would revolt if the 25-year-old left.
The Red Sox could be in play for the All-Star infielder if he enters free agency in 2025. He might not get his wish to play with Juan Soto, but Guerrero is friends with Rafael Devers and that could entice him to join Boston.
Toronto is among multiple teams interested in Bregman, including the Red Sox. However, it doesn’t sound like the Jays have a strong chance at signing the two-time World Series champion. They might have better odds than the Yankees, but Boston might beat out Toronto on another free agent.
The Blue Jays will try their best to do something, but there will be multiple teams waiting to swoop in if they fail to reach their goals.
