Ange Postecoglou shuts down Marcus Rashford to Tottenham talk
As January approaches, Tottenham need attacking reinforcements. However, Ange Postecoglou is distancing himself from transfer targets while there are still games to be played – including Marcus Rashford.
Tottenham need help in attack
With Tottenham missing their starting goalkeeper and centre-backs, there has been a lot of focus on the need for new defensive figures at the club.
However, as Richarlison and Wilson Odobert have proven to be largely unavailable so far, Tottenham’s attack also needs support.
With no natural backups to Dominic Solanke or Brennan Johnson, Tottenham are being forced to rotate awkwardly. Heung-min Son and Dejan Kulusevski have been tasked with performing up front and on the right respectively, but neither are that well suited to those roles.
Tottenham need attacking depth to help sustain their attacking intent for 90 minutes in multiple competitions, which does not disrupt other positions on the pitch.
Ange Postecoglou dismisses Marcus Rashford rumours
Spurs manager, Ange Postecoglou refused to comment on links to Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford or the striker’s comments about being ready for a new challenge.
Regarding Rashford’s interview, Postecoglou said (FootballLondon): “No interest. Don’t care. Not interested, he is a Manchester United player. A very good player, they have plenty of good players. But I manage my players and other managers will manage their own players. In terms of Marcus’ situation, I have no real desire to examine it any further.
When pressed on the subject of Spurs’ links to Rashford, Postecoglou added “Ah, mate if I looked at everyone we were linked to, I would have no time to do anything else to be honest. I have got other people to do that part of the process. For us, we’ve been pretty disciplined in what we’re trying to build here and we’ll continue to be so.
“That’s not on my radar. You can ask me about Marcus but you can ask me about every single Premier League footballer and I’ll say the same thing.”
Marcus Rashford is an admirable player, but not what Spurs need
There is a lot to admire about Marcus Rashford. A highly talented footballer, but also a kind and virtuous person who carries themselves well within a political landscape that does not often reward empathy.
However, Tottenham are realistically looking for someone to deputise Solanke or Johnson and there is not much evidence of Rashford being suitable for either role.
He is more comfortable playing off of the left where Spurs already have Heung-min Son, Wilson Odobert and Mikey Moore. Furthermore, his qualities do not align with the hold-up play and relentless pressing that Dominic Solanke provides.
Postecoglou will dismiss transfer links regardless of the player, but in this circumstance, Rashford does not address any of Tottenham’s most urgent issues.
