Homeward Bound wrapping party brings holiday presents to hundreds
About 24 volunteers gathered in Novato on Monday to wrap hundreds of gifts for people who have previously experienced homelessness.
The annual event, organized by the nonprofit Homeward Bound of Marin, assembles 500 presents to give to those moving into shelter or supportive housing programs.
“People who have been without housing have very few possessions,” said Maura Thurman, a spokesperson for the nonprofit. “Receiving something new as a holiday gift gives people a sense that they have dignity and value, and the fun of the holiday. They’re not invisible like many people feel on the streets and that brings hope.”
Bank of America contributed $5,000 and volunteers to the event. Several smaller sponsorships came in from the community. Gifts include items such as backpacks, shoulder bags, or beauty kits. The gifts will be given to about 350 people on Christmas Day.
