Mets Sign Chris Williams to Minor League Deal
According to Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic, the New York Mets have signed catcher Chris Williams to a minor league deal. The deal presumably includes an invitation to major league camp.
Williams, 28, has spent his entire minor league career in the Minnesota Twins organization following their drafting him in the eighth round of the 2018 draft out of Clemson University. In 2024, Williams hit .221/.339/.461 with 16 doubles, 17 home runs, 41 RBIs in 88 games, and went five-for-five stealing bases. Williams also spent all of the 2023 season in Triple-A, where he hit 21 home runs, knocked in 75 runs, and had a .847 OPS in 95 games. The right-handed hitter had a career-high 28 home runs between Double and Triple-A during the 2022 season.
Defensively, Williams has played all over the field, with a majority of his time being split between catcher and first base. In 2024, Williams played 43 games as a catcher, 19 games at first base, one at third base, 16 in left field, two in right field, and even pitched in one game.
Williams will likely start the season on the Triple-A Syracuse Mets roster with Jakson Reetz. The Mets signed Reetz to a minor league deal earlier this offseason.
Williams was recognized for this work off the field in 2024, receiving the Harmon Killebrew Award. The Killebrew Award recognizes the player at each Twins affiliate for outstanding community service.
“He’s just a great dude, great dude in the clubhouse, and he’s doing some awesome things off the field too, so it’s great to have him here,” St. Paul Saints manager Toby Gardenhire said.
