Legendary Brooklyn pizza spot L&B Spumoni Gardens expands for first time
BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- L&B Spumoni Gardens, a beloved Brooklyn institution, has officially opened its second location in Dumbo after 85 years of serving iconic Sicilian pizza and spumoni from its original Gravesend spot.
The new outpost, located at 46 Old Fulton St., marks a significant milestone for the family-owned business that has been a staple of Brooklyn's culinary scene since 1939.
Charlie Cavallo, general manager of the Dumbo location, emphasized the historical significance of this expansion.
"It's the second location after 85 years. They wanted to expand their family name and just, you know, they're proud of it, they're successful at it, and it was time to expand," Cavallo said.
The new pizzeria aims to replicate the success of the original location, bringing its famous "upside-down" Sicilian pie and homemade spumoni to the heart of Dumbo. Cavallo explained what sets L&B apart.
"We're famous for many things, but two in particular. One is our upside-down Sicilian pie, which is cheese on bottom, sauce on top, and also our Spumoni," Cavallo said.
Customers are already raving about the pizza. One patron commented, "I think it's different, it's not too heavy. I like the flavor, I like the sauce a lot." Another added, "I just [love] the Sicilians, the sauce on top, the parmesan on top of it, and the fresh mozzarella on the bottom, it's great."
Despite the presence of other popular pizzerias nearby, L&B Spumoni Gardens is confident in its unique offering.
Cavallo noted, "So most of the pizzas in the area are all brick oven, and we are regular gas ovens, and we bake things at different temperatures than the other guys too."
As a touching gesture, the staff has posted a "Best Wishes" sign on a dollar bill from FDNY on the wall for good luck, adding a personal touch to the new space.
L&B Spumoni Gardens in Dumbo is now open seven days a week, starting at 11 a.m.
Cavallo expressed his commitment to maintaining the high standards that have made L&B a Brooklyn favorite. "We have an excellent product, and we definitely stand by it," he said.
