Campbell did the right thing by accepting ban, says Bennett
KINGSTON – President of the Jamaica Cricket Association, Dr Donovan Bennett, says he fully supports the decision by Jamaica Scorpions’ captain John Campbell to accept the four-game suspension handed out to him by Cricket West Indies (CWI).
Campbell was disciplined for his role in last month’s CG United Super50 final against Barbados Pride, where he opted not to be present for the toss following the umpire’s decision to start the rain-affected contest.
It resulted in the match being forfeited and CWI took the decision to withhold the US$100 000 prize for the winners as well as the US$50 000 for the runners-up.
While Barbados Pride skipper Raymon Reifer is fighting the same Level 3 charges which Campbell faced, the Jamaican accepted the charges.
Bennett, who publicly disagreed with the manner in which Campbell and Reifer handled the situation, said he believed Campbell did the right thing.
“Remember that John (Campbell) is coming off a two-year ban, and if he had gotten the full gamut of what was being thrown at him, it would have been five years.
“Not only could he have been banned from eight white-ball games, but there is a strong possibility that he would have been banned from four-day games also, which would have set him back further,” Bennett explained. (CMC)
