Sports briefs: Redwood girls win Fremont Firebird Classic
Sarah Farese scored two goals and added an assist as the Redwood High girls soccer team won the Fremont Firebird Classic after downing Sobrato 5-0 in Saturday’s final.
The Giants (4-0-1) went 3-0-1 at the tournament, which spanned the past two weeks. Kaia Amir, Sydney Middleton, and Caitlin Titcombe had the other goals for Redwood. Addison Ryba, Lily Patrizi, and Zoe Clark had the other assists.
Next up for Redwood is an away game against Marin Academy on Tuesday.
Boys soccer
Monty Cooke scored in the 58th minute to put Terra Linda in front in an eventual 1-1 tie against Sonoma Valley at the Mission City Invitational at San Rafael High on Saturday.
Archie Williams made a game of it against Granada in the second half before falling 6-4 in the second game on Saturday. The Peregrine Falcons (2-2-1) trailed 5-0 at the half before scoring three consecutive goals then having a potential fourth goal wiped away for offside.
Sean Chamberlain scored twice to pace Archie Williams. Chala Rosenthal and Will Finley each had a goal and an assist. Jake Morrison had two assists.
Redwood played in the late game on Friday night, conceding a pair of penalty kicks in the 34th and 79th minutes of a 2-1 loss against Everett Alvarez. Sam Gersch scored for the Giants (2-1) in the 49th minute.
- Marin Catholic scored a late winner in a 3-2 victory against Novato in a non-league game on Saturday. Lukas Sibrian scored the first goal for the Hornets (0-2-0). Novato’s second score was an own goal by MC (4-2-0) after Christian Sarato beat a player down the line and sent a cross into the box that deflected in off a defender.
- Alex Schoell scored off an assist from River Jones as Marin Academy (0-3-1) fell 3-1 at home against Bellarmine on Saturday.
Boys basketball
After San Domenico secured its spot in the final, host Archie Williams locked in its spot for a neighborhood tussle for the title at the Carl “Red” Brown Tournament. The Peregrine Falcons beat Hayward, 62-41 in Friday’s semifinals.
Junior Brian Wright led the Falcons (4-3) with 20 points and three rebounds, while senior Shyama Dean added 12 points and three steals. Junior Ephraim Sohn finished with 15 points, six rebounds and four steals. Junior captain Grady Stewart dished out seven assists.
- Gio Brovelli hit four 3-pointers in an electrifying first half as San Rafael raced ahead of Kelseyville and never looked back during a 74-52 semifinal win on Friday night at the 75th annual REIBT in Healdsburg. Brovelli finished with 27 points, while teammate Luke Shapiro added 22 points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Bulldogs. Will Healy narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds, and Anthony Tajbakhsh hit seven points and seven rebounds.
- San Marin came up just short against Casa Grande in Friday’s 61-58 semifinal loss at the Rose City Tournament in Santa Rosa. Grant Means led the Mustangs with 17 points, while Rio Seiler had 12. Miller Morgan collected eight rebounds for San Marin, which plays Napa in the third-place game.
- Redwood (2-3) dropped a 63-41 road game against University on Friday night.
Girls basketball
Avery Myerberg outscored Casa Grande by herself as Branson rolled to a 66-34 on Saturday. Myerberg made eight 3-pointers en route to 38 points for the Bulls (6-2).
College football
Former Marin Catholic standout Matteo Perez had more than 100 yards from scrimmage as UC Davis lost 35-21 to South Dakota in the FCS quarterfinals on Saturday. Perez had 59 rushing yards and caught seven passes for 52 more yards. Perez’s touchdown catch pulled the Aggies within 21-14 in the second quarter.
