Charli XCX wins Artist and Album of the Year at Gold Derby Music Awards, but voters spread the wealth
Charli XCX ‘s keeping her Brat Summer party going deep into the fall.
The dance pop artist was the big winner at the 5th Annual Gold Derby Music Awards. Charli claimed Artist of the Year as well as Album of the Year for her critically hailed “Brat.” She also claimed the inaugural award for Best Dance/EDM Artist. But voters spread the wealth across our 27 categories.
More than 1,700 registered Gold Derby users weighed in, honoring the best music released from Sept. 16, 2023 through Aug. 30, 2024 — the same as the Grammy eligibility period. Aside from Charli XCX’s big wins, Billie Eilish and Finneas scored the Song of the Year (“Birds of a Feather”), Sabrina Carpenter laid claim to Record of the Year (“Espresso”), and Chappell Roan was dubbed Best New Artist. This is widest-ranging winners list in GDMAs history, which up until now has been dominated by Taylor Swift.
Swift swept last year, winning all nine of her categories, including Artist, Album, Record, and Song of the Year. But for the first time in the history of our awards, Swift leaves empty-handed this time around, going zero-for-five. You can’t win ’em all. Instead, the most awarded artist of the year was Ariana Grande, who prevailed four times: Best Music Video for “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love),” Best R&B Song for “The Boy Is Mine” with Brandy and Monica, Best Pop Album for “Eternal Sunshine,” and Best Pop Artist.
Two artists managed clean sweeps of their genre categories. Shakira won Best Latin Artist, Best Latin Song (“Puntería” with Cardi B), and Best Latin Album (“Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran”); last year she also won the artist and song awards. Meanwhile, Beyoncé dominated a brand new genre. The R&B superstar was named Best Country/Americana Artist, and she also claimed prizes for album (“Cowboy Carter”) and song (“Texas Hold ‘Em”) in that field.
Kendrick Lamar won two of three in his genre: Best Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and Best Rap/Hip-Hop Song for “Not Like Us,” his blockbuster track dissing fellow rapper Drake. Lamar didn’t have an album out during the eligibility period, though (“GNX” will be eligible for next year’s awards), so he couldn’t nab Best Rap/Hip-Hop Album. That went instead to Megan Thee Stallion‘s “Megan.”
The rock/alternative field split three different ways with Hozier named Best Rock/Alternative Artist, Vampire Weekend claiming Best Rock/Alternative Album for the surprisingly Grammy-snubbed “Only God Was Above Us,” and pop star Olivia Rodrigo rocking out the Best Rock/Alternative Song, “Obsessed.”
SZA defended her title as Best R&B Artist, while Tyla‘s self-titled release was the Best R&B Album. Rounding out the winners, Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars teamed up to win Best Collaboration for “Die With a Smile.” And Coldplay were named Best Group.
