Next week will be big for Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven injuries – Postecoglou
Tottenham manager, Ange Postecoglou attempts to ease expectations over injury return dates for his first-choice centre-backs, Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven. Next week could be big in terms of news though.
Romero and Van de Ven pick up new injuries against Chelsea
The original expectation was that Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero would return to action in mid-December. Consequently, very few expected them to both be named in the starting line-up against Chelsea.
While neither reportedly exacerbated their previous injuries, both ended up picking up new issues during the game. Ange Postecoglou initially believed Van de Ven’s substitution was precautionary due to tightness, but has since clarified that the centre-back has suffered a new hamstring injury.
Shortly after the match, reports from Gaston Edul on X suggested Romero had injured his quad and would be looking at approximately six weeks out, which would see him return towards the end of January.
Ange Postecoglou insists on patience regarding injury updates
Speaking before Tottenham’s trip to Southampton, Ange Postecoglou has said it is too early to discuss when Van de Ven and Romero may return. Next week should be big in terms of injury news on the pair though.
When asked if there was any new info regarding their injuries, Postecoglou said (FootballLondon): “No, mate. Obviously, guys get injured and without getting too technical, you need to let the injury settle down before you get a real prognosis.
“So it will probably be next week some time with Micky and Cristian. Everyone got through last night, so they are all good to go. Biss is suspended this weekend, so he’ll miss out.”
It is unlikely Van de Ven and Romero will be back any time soon
Postecogolou was unable to provide a definitive update regarding Tottenham’s primary centre-back pair. However, the fact that the club have been unable to fully evaluate the injuries five days after the match, indicates a level of inflammation that suggests the two Spurs players are unlikely to be featuring within the next few matches.
This means that at least until January or the potential return of Ben Davies, it will be Radu Dragusin and Archie Gray playing every game in defence. While we can praise Gray and Dragusin’s successes in each of their performances, the fact they are the only available centre-backs is an enormous caveat to any Tottenham performance.
