Alex Edwards, 1946 – 2024
Hibernian FC is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of a true Hibs legend, Alex Edwards.
Alex Edwards, known as 'Mickey', was a mercurial winger with a unique playing style that combined tenacity, creativity and a remarkable passing range. He was an integral member of the Hibees' famous 'Turnbull's Tornadoes' team of the 1970s.
Edwards was inducted into the Hibernian Hall of Fame in October 2024, recognising his contributions in helping Hibs lift the League Cup in 1972 as a part of what was undoubtedly one of the Club's greatest-ever XIs.
Arriving at Easter Road in 1971, Edwards had previously played for his hometown side Dunfermline Athletic where legendary manager Jock Stein gave him his senior debut at just 16 years-old.
With the Pars, he lifted the Scottish Cup in 1968, beating Hearts 3-1 in the Final.
Eddie Turnbull brought the then-25 year-old to Leith, where he forged a fearsome partnership with John Brownlie on the right side for the Tornadoes.
Edwards' influence was undeniable as he played a key part in both goals that led Hibs to a 2-1 victory over Celtic in the League Cup Final at Hampden.
Months later, he would play a huge role in one of Hibernian's most memorable victories, as the Hibees scored seven unanswered goals in the Edinburgh Derby at Tynecastle on New Year's Day, 1973.
The midfielder was also involved in famous European nights with the Hibees, including a 6-1 victory over Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon at Easter Road and scoring against Liverpool at Anfield.
After 215 appearances for the Club, notching 12 goals, Edwards finished his career with Arbroath.
He will be remembered not only as a brilliant footballer and a ferocious competitor but also as one of the finest players never to be capped by Scotland.
Despite being an exceptional dribbler, when most supporters are asked about Edwards they'll mention his incredible passing ability.
Hibernian Football Club extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.
Rest in peace, Mickey. To the angels high above.
