North Portland stabbing suspect dies in police custody, investigation ongoing
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A suspect arrested after a stabbing died while in police custody late Wednesday night, according to the Portland Police Bureau.
Officers responded to a report of a stabbing at a convenience store near 1500 N Going Street, where they found an injured man who was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries around 10 p.m., officials said.
The suspect was later arrested at N Interstate Avenue and Humboldt Street, with authorities noting that “officers detained the suspect in handcuffs without resistance or force used.”
While in custody, the suspect lost consciousness and officers requested a medical evaluation, according to police.
“Officers began CPR until EMS arrived and took over,” PPB said. “Despite lifesaving efforts, the suspect died at the scene.”
The man’s identity has yet to be shared with the public, and a medical examiner is expected to determine the cause of his death.
Portland Police Homicide Unit Detectives responded to investigate the in-custody death. The officers involved were placed on administrative leave, per standard protocol.
During the investigation, N Interstate Avenue was closed in both directions between Going Street and Alberta Street.
