Red Sox’s Alex Cora Made This ‘Guarantee’ On Rafael Devers’ Position
Rafael Devers remains the current face of the Boston Red Sox and will still impact the team for years to come.
Where that is will be seen moving forward.
The Red Sox have been linked to other impact third basemen in hypothetical moves for right-handed power in Alex Bregman and Nolan Arenado. In corresponding thoughts, that’s sparked debates over whether one of those players would force the Red Sox third baseman to a different position.
Boston manager Alex Cora shut down that possibility at this point of the offseason.
“I don’t know where that comes from,” Cora told reporters at the Winter Meetings Monday in Dallas, Texas. “I haven’t talked to Raffy about that. I have never talked to his agent about that. Obviously, people talk about his defense. Actually, I thought last year he did an outstanding job, especially to his left.”
Cora added that if a positional change ever does come about around Boston’s roster, the team will make that known internally before any conversations outside the building for the Red Sox.
“The player will know first,” Cora said. “I guarantee you we haven’t had those conversations.”
Devers signed an 11-year, $331 million extension with the Red Sox prior to 2023. Cora alluded to the level of responsibility and expectation that comes with such a contract
“When you sign a contract like that, he signed as a third baseman and he wants to be a third baseman. Right now, he’s the third baseman of the Boston Red Sox.”
